What is a 4.0 GPA? What's the relationship among GPA, average and As? Do schools care more about average or the score for every single course? Which hypothetical scenario looks better, 90% & 100% or 95% & 95%?

A 4.0 GPA requires that a student earn all 'A’s which is normally 93%+ in each class. From what I understand, all that is shown on a transcript is what grade you earned in a class, not your percentage, so to answer your question, 95% & 95% is better because it shows up as two 'A’s.

^In most schools, an A is a 90% or above.

At my school, a 90-92% is an A- which is a 3.7. So, at my school you’d need all 93%'s or more.

For you guys is the GPA based on semester grades or do six-week grades factor into it as well?

I agree; I’ve seen MANY high schools who automatically consider 90’s and above solid A’s. Then again, at the two high schools I’ve attended so far, a 90-92% would get me a 3.7 at my first HS and a 3.67 at my current HS.

On the other hand, if your school reports A-minuses and you have more of them than you’d like, it’s definitely not the end of the world. I remember reading this thread in the Stanford forum where a parent phoned the admissions office directly and asked them how they recalculated prospective applicants’ GPA’s. The adcom’s response was that they considered all A’s as 4.0’s, even A-'s and A+'s. Makes sense too; if A-'s were assigned a different value, it would be to the disadvantage of the kids whose high schools use the 90-92 = A- system. Plus, I’d imagine that the adcoms would want to spare themselves a bit of number crunching ;)

We have a numerical GPA in our school so yeah.

That would be nice for my school 93-100 is an A and 92-85 is a b. I’d be up at least .4 or 5 in my 2 years if that 3.7 rule was made.

^Me too! Stupid NC.

And my school only factors final grades into GPA.

What happens if a person has consistent 95%+ but one 85% ~90%? Should he/she explain the situation to the adcoms or just let it go?

lol at the 3.7 for an A -. I would have like a 3.8 right now max UW instead of like a 3.92
