A Black, Gay First-Year's Views on W&L

Okay - let’s get this started with. There is an abundance of people hating on W&L on College Confidential; mostly people who don’t go here and are basing their opinions off of old stereotypes about this school. So, as someone who is a minority in many ways, I thought I’d help illuminate what W&L truly is like, in many different aspects and in no particular order:

  1. This school is gorgeous. I'm still stunned every single day by the campus' beauty. I've visited over 15 schools, and this one is, by far, the most beautiful one.
  2. The student body has A LOT of liberal kids - this was very visible after election night. I thankfully still haven't run into a single person who openly supports Trump, though I have friends who are Republicans.
  3. The party scene is great, but there are many other options to have fun. Friday Night Underground is relatively recent but has really attracted the hipsters of campus and become this big thing on campus.
  4. Yeah, greek life is huge. Yet, that make it very inclusive. Even though I'm a pretty quirky kid, there are literally three fraternities fighting to get me to rush them right now. Also, fall term is soooooo fun as a freshman: lots of free dinners, dances and cool upperclassmen trying to get to know you.
  5. The people are so so supportive and friendly. When I'm having a bad day, or struggling with classes, my friends, RA, and PC all rush to make me feel better and help me out in any way they can. Also, the fact that people hold the door for each other still baffles me, as someone from the cold, shrill northeast.
  6. The surrounding area is even more beautiful than the campus itself, if that is even possible. The mountains, the rivers, the sunsets, the cute town of Lex. My first week here my hall hiked Devil's Marbleyard and holy **** that was pretty.
  7. The classes are very hard, but the professors are amazing. They are so motivated to get to know you if you seek them out, and are generally very good at teaching. I had literally had dinner at my professor's house last week and he already offered me a summer research position.
  8. The honor system is 1000% legit. People leave their stuff laying around campus, and two days later it's still there. Cheating seems to be non-existent; I've had several take-home tests and whatnot. It's also nice getting to schedule our own finals.

Thank you for posting this. Very helpful! I’m happy to hear your experience is so positive.

Sounds like you are having an amazing time! I’m so glad!

“I thankfully still haven’t run into a single person who openly supports Trump”. Seriously? Because a logical person can’t support Trump… Damn people who have opposing viewpoints.

@in4655 Opposing viewpoints, sure. Being a racist, misogynistic douche, nah.

What?
A judgemental liberal??

@froshkiddo And what does categorizing everyone that supports Trump as a racist, misogynistic make you? Believe it or not, there are logical reasons to support Trump, at least over Hillary Clinton. There are as many bigots in the Democratic party as there are in the Republican party.

@IN4655 are there reasons to support trump that aren’t racism or sexism or whatever? sure. however, in supporting him, you are basically saying that women/racial minorities/sexual minorities are worth less than your concerns about your tax rate or “draining the swamp” (lol) or “appointing supreme court justices” (probably to curtail women’s reproductive rights or curb the advancement of lgbtq rights). that’s not the kind of people I want to relate to, sorry.

You’re funny, @froshkiddo
I hope your college experience opens your mind just a little.

I concur with @froshkiddo. There are plenty of “liberal” and democratic students at WLU. Trump is an idiot! Yes, there are plenty of people that are OK with him being president because it doesn’t hurt them and may even benefit them. That does not mean that his policies are moral, ethical or in keeping with the US Constitution. That remains to be seen in the courts. Thankfully, we have three equal branches of government…for now.
