A Capella Group

Hi, I'm a recent admit to williams, and was wondering how the acapella scene was at Williams. Is there a group that is far beyond others? How are each of the the group's chemistry/ reputation?

I'm a guy, so an all-male acapella or a Co-ed acapella would be the best fit!

I'm doing my own research as well, but it'd be nice to hear feedbacks from current students/ alums.

Thanks!

Hey acappellajunkie (and anyone else interested in the a cappella scene at Williams)!

I’m a Williams '06, and I directed The Elizabethans, one of the 7 a cappella groups on campus. I’ll give you a brief (and heavily biased) summary of the various groups, but feel free to check out their websites too. A cappella groups are a social nexus, and you definitely want to make sure you fit in with them socially as well as musically. Don’t forget about the Concert/Chamber Choirs as well, the director (Brad Wells) is phenomenal.

The Elizabethans (www.elizabethans.org): Co-ed group specializing in music from the Renaissance through choral music of the modern era. We did everything from Gregorian chant, madrigals, motets, spirituals, jazz, and the music you might have done in choir (although with only 12-15ish people. Socially we tend to be the more “alternative/hippie” type, although I’m pretty nerdy.

Springstreeters/Octet: All Men’s groups of ~15 guys who do roughly similar repertoire of mostly pop background + soloist. Socially, they have different styles, but of course this has likely changed over the past 5 years, I always saw both as “cool/popular” groups.

Ephoria/Accidentals: All Women’s groups who also do mostly pop. I’m sorry I can’t be more specific here…I love me some men’s singing.

Good Question: Co-ed pop and sometimes goofy songs. A little more alternative socially and in repertoire selection.

Ephlats: Co-ed pop, closer in repertoire to the Streeters/Octet.
