A Car at Stanford

I know a wealthy benefactor that wants to give me a car... a very nice one.

Does Stanford have a policy against students with automobiles?

Freshman are not allowed to have a car on campus. However, it is not too difficult to get an upperclassman to get you a parking pass. You have to find one tho to do it for you. Everyone else can get a parking permit and bring a car on campus

I dont own a car but I think they cost 250ish dollars. Someone else verify this for me.

lol 250$… I assume you’re talking about the permit?

Freshmen aren’t allowed to have cars. I wouldn’t recommend illegally getting a permit from an upperclassmen. Campus police have become much more strict recently and people have gotten in a lot of trouble if they’re caught.

a stanford explained to me as they technically “pay” u not to have a car (like a tuition rebate kinda thing?) but if u have a car u dont get that
something like that. that was 2 years ago so i’m pretty sure they changed the policy
i also don’t know the specifics

but marchballer is right. freshmen cannot have cars on campus without “a compelling reason”

Dang :(. Thanks guys!

yeah, no escapades to San Francisco until sophomore year, unless you have upperclassman connections

^can’t you take the bus to san fran though?

and is there any particular reason you can’t have a car as a freshman anyway? (not planning on bringing one, but just curious.)

Something about how there are limits placed on the expanse of Stanford’s property. Too many freshman w/ cars would cause undue expansion that would detract from maintaining the other facilities.

Idk it sounded really BS

Honestly, having a car isn’t all that useful at Stanford. It’s impossible to park anywhere except your residence on campus during the day, so you’ll never drive it around campus. And the Marguerite makes it easy to hitch a ride to the useful off-campus places nearly (Stanford Shopping Center, San Antonio Shopping Center, downtown PA, Cal Ave). And you’ll use the Caltrain to get to SF.

Plus biking can get you everywhere. I love my bike! It’s an easy bike ride to the Caltrain station and the shopping center.

I have a car. To be honest, I only have one because I lived on campus over the summer while doing an internship, and I needed to commute. During a normal school week, I might drive once or twice. I never drive to class because it’s almost always more convenient to bike. It does cost around $250 for a one year parking permit.

I don’t think you’ll have much use for a car as a freshman, because the freshmen social scene is so campus oriented (perhaps as a result of the no-cars policy). Once you become an upperclassman, though, it becomes pretty useful to have a car. You’ll want to drive to Safeway, go out to eat, go on roadtrips, take friends to the airport, etc. The Marguerite is generally regarded as a headache that nobody wants to deal with due to their confusing schedules and sometimes-inconvenient routes. I’d say roughly 50% of seniors have cars.

50% of seniors seems kind of high to me. Maybe a little less like 35 or 40%. However everything else Jimmy said is pretty much true.

I’m going to Stanford next year, and given my love for cars, I was wondering about this too.

I found this link on Stanford’s website, which has pretty much all the info.
[Parking Information : Resident students](http://transportation.stanford.edu/parking_info/ResidentStudent.shtml)

Thought I’ll share it. Look it up.

I’ll bet people would have appreciated that more if someone else hadn’t shared the same link three weeks ago. It helps to read the thread before responding.

I think the reason to have a car at Stanford is not to use it around Palo Alto, or San Francisco even (although it IS tempting to drive up there rather than train). But there are a whole bunch of really beautiful places on the Peninsula coast, in Marin, and in the Napa and Sonoma valleys, that are much harder (and sometimes impossible) to get to unless someone has a car.
