I know most people ride bikes, but I was just wondering, how many student drive at stanford?

freshmen aren't allowed to have cars on campus

they arent allowed to, but i know my sisters friend managed to bring hers up, theres just a lot of red tape

I think if you can have the car on campus in someone else's name, it's technically feasible for a freshman to bring a car to campus.

Anybody know how easy it is to get to SF without a car? I know there's the BART, and you probably have to take a bus to it............ or you can take the bus the whole way probably. I love SF, and I probably won't have a car after freshman year, either.

you can take the CalTrain which is on the border between stanford and palo alto (the end of palm drive) and it takes 40min. (or was it an hour. i forget, but its pretty quick). costs $5. it doesnt take you directly to the heart of SF, but its like 5min walk to the main shopping area or china town.

You can take Caltrain (from the Palo Alto Transit Center) all the way to SF. You can also take Caltrain to the Millbrae Transit Center and transfer over to BART. I don't know about the relative safety of the respective areas of SF that the Caltrain and BART stations are in.

When I visited Stanford I stayed in San Francisco, so I have some experience moving between the two. It was very easy to get from the Caltrain station in Palo Alto to the Stanford campus - campus buses stop there, plus it's only like two blocks away. The parts of San Francisco with the BART and Caltrain stations are pretty close to anywhere you'd want to be, and walking is no big deal. The Caltrain station is a little out of the way, but it's not bad.

all the above are true. freshmen aren't supposed to, but can get upperclassmen to buy permits for cars. (if you get caught, i believe your parking privileges are rescinded for some amount of time...maybe your remaining years at Stanford? not sure...)

keep in mind that if you are placed in a four class dorm, there are upperclassmen that could technically drive you or, if they're kind enough, let you borrow their cars.
