A Castle for Christmas: A Frivolous Discussion about a Ridiculous movie

Enjoy!!

Haha! I am guessing the writer of the article isn’t worried about competition from me.

BUT, no comment on the mystery couple checking in, and Angus’s selective mutism? Fail!

@MYOS1634 thank you for that! From the Guardian piece:

“It is great to see more and more films being made in Scotland, with our world-class scenery and rapidly improving facilities. Good Omens is being filmed here and, despite being about a gay angel and a demon falling in love in an apocalypse, is notably more realistic and down-to-earth than A Castle for Christmas.”

Ha, I thought it was fun that Brooke Shields wore sneakers (first scene, arriving from the airport) and flat (though some of them were odd) instead of spiky high heels.

My husband was not happy that I made him watch it. (Usually I only watch TV in evening ,when we both watch together.) I had assured him he’d like it more than usual Hallmark movies since there was good scenery of Scotland, which we’d like to visit someday.

The changed dress: I figured that the older knitting lady that volunteered to do a fitting on it also did a bit of redesign.

This board is dangerous. First you all made me buy a Trader Joe’s waxed amaryllis, and now you made me watch a Netflix Christmas movie. This is not me, help me, I’m assimilating! At least Chanukah is over

So - a few thoughts.

(1) Yes, someone took that dress that was missing a top, pulled out a few yards of tartan from under the skirt and turned it into a different bodice, but still couldn’t find enough material for a shawl or jacket.

(2) Not only did they decorate that castle overnight, but Myles and Thomas kept about 20 rooms shining clean by themselves. With a can of polish and one cleaning cloth, apparently. Maybe Hamish helped?

(3) Myles started one sentence with “FYI.” I sincerely doubt that was something he normally said.

(4) Myles’ ex allegedly left him to trade up a title. Um, he was a duke! I’ve read enough romances to know that’s pretty close to the top. Maybe she married a prince or an English duke or a higher ranked Scottish duke? As a divorcee.

(5) They went to cut down one six foot tree, but there were several at the party, the tallest one being maybe 12 feet. Who cut those down, and did they plant two trees for everyone they cut?

(6) There was enough money to provide not only the lights and decorations, but cases of champagne and tables full of fancy food. But they couldn’t patch the roof leaks? That much water coming through meant some serious damage. I was waiting for the entire roof to come crashing down during the dance.

(7) How come Myles never said, “As you wish”? They could throw in that weird Donatello Easter egg that no one understood, but this would have been a slam dunk. Edit: And Sophie could have jumped out of the window onto the horse at the end.

I always love Drew Barrymore!

I recently purchased mikes hot honey, some expensive beauty supply advent calendars, and am now addicted to Succession. There are others

That would have been a fantastic Easter egg! Shame on them! Nice list @Marilyn . Go back to Trader Joe’s and get their tin of English Toffee. I anticipate your thanks in advance, and you’re welcome.

Planting trees in December in Scotland–wonder how well that works out!

Well, to be fair, there were leaves on the non-fir trees for almost the entire movie. So I don’t think it was actually December, haha.

The leaves on the trees were bothering me- it’s supposed to be December! My DH walked in the room while I was watching and we commented on it. He then asked Alexa about the current temperature in Scotland! It was 42 degrees, not as bad as we thought it might be, but both of us agreed that it was not December when they filmed.

How did they get the tree home- on two horses?
I assumed the dress was new? Why did Myles say ‘you should not be wearing that’?

She found the dress in the attics where it had remained undamaged by water, bats, rats, or Hamish. Presumably it had belonged to Myles’ mother. Maybe he didn’t want her to wear it because he felt weird wanting to sleep with someone wearing Mom’s dress?

Or he thought she shouldn’t be wearing anything. Nothing comes between me and my kilt!

15 posts were split to a new thread: Classic Christmas Movies You DON’T Like

A little confused if I should be posting on this thread but it’s not locked so here we go
.

I watched this movie last night just to see what the hubbub was about
I guess I didn’t read this thread closely enough to realize this was sort of a Hallmark movie on steroids! I’ve already expressed my dislike for Hallmark movies here on CC.

Corny for sure but someone who loves this type of movie AND Christmas and Christmas decorations would probably be in heaven.

What does Brooke Shields do these day? I seriously don’t know. She is a beautiful woman and like mentioned above, I love that she carries her shapely beautiful body at age 56.

Sure, post away. Glad this thread inspired you to watch something frivolous!

The Seattle Times rated it 4 out of 5 holiday lights. She does seem to be influenced by cute dogs .

Gotta love Moira’s writing! :+1::+1:

This commenter was spot on: “ Thank you for sacrificing yourself for others.”

For the record, my husband loves Hallmark type movies. Watches them all the time. (He also watches Ancient Aliens just so it evens things out.)

Today we watched “Dear Christmas.” Oh my word. Known name actors but the acting and the script were horrible. Of course we couldn’t shut it off. A train wreck we couldn’t turn away from.

Merry Christmas everyone!

We’ve been watching Home for Christmas, the Norwegian series. Very entertaining and definitely not suitable for children. You’ve been warned, haha.
