A Chinese Student in US High School, What are My Chances? Thanks!

Hey guys I am a junior in FL. Originally I am from China and I started high school in U.S. three years ago. English is my second language and I am just wondering the chance of getting in NYU and Columbia… Thanks a lot.

9th grade GPA4.05; 10th grade 4.21(2 honors, all As) 11th grade 4.21(3APs, but few Bs)
My SAT is 2100 so far and I am going to improve on that.
I ve been active in our school’s student council(class rep), leadership group, MUN team, swimming team +cross country+ baseball. Tons of community services(both China& U.S.)
I ve been working(internship) in bank of China and the Palace Museum(the Forbidden City)

The thing that makes me different from others is that I am passionate about architecture, culture and history stuff like that. I got internship in Palace Museum 3times, and also worked(or volunteer) in 3 other museums(all in China though)
I also have an independent study at school, called “White House of China” which I am working on right now, basically is to make 3D models and documentary…

I really want to get into NYU or Columbia… See, my problem is, the grades…
I only take 3 APs this year and have B in Apush(the exam change this yr, makes it harder for me to have good grade)
Totally mess up with my Spanish2 Honors ( solid B ). Have an A in Regular English though.

I am self learning AP MicroEcon and AP Envi and will take the exam.

Well, lastly, just want to mention my grades again… Straight As in 9th and 10th grade, but 4Bs(B+ AP CAL, B APush B Spanish Honors and B+ in art(the teacher gives everyone Bs…)

I also want to held an international day event at school, showing the leadership stuff.

So, what do you guys say? I am very stress out and confused right now caz everyone saying Columbia will first get rid of a hold bunch of applicants who have many Bs … I am going to work as hard as I can in 2nd semester, but a B in Spanish and Apush is hard to change.

Thank you!!!

And also many school shows, performances experiences…

Columbia is a crapshoot.
NYU is a match but can your parents pay 60K a year?

You’ve identified two dream schools. Now’s the time to start the real work: identify match and safety schools.
Use the Supermatch tool in the column on the left. Then use Net Price Calculators to cross any college that’s too expensive.
A match school would be a college that you like, can afford and that has 40%+ admit rates.
A safety school would be a college that you like, can afford, and where you’re in the top 25% (if not top 10%) of admitted students.

Completely agree with MYOS. Those are dream schools, make sure to have backups.

Also, many people downplay the importance of essays in the application process. You mentioned that English is your second language–if I were you, I’d write the application essays in advance and work with someone (an English teacher or an advisor) to get rid of grammatical errors and refine the essay. Even if you have great marks in school, poorly written essays that don’t reflect your unique characteristics can put you in the “not” pile very quickly.
