I am a junior in Maine in a small town where no one thinks they are going anywhere, but I am very different and know I am goin somewhere. I want to major in Biochemistry/Molecular Biology. I havejust visited Boston University only yesterday and I knew it was going to be my first option and I would apply early desicion. It is a great school that is rigorous in academics and offers many research opportunites. I was completely in love with the whole aspect of the school until... I got there. I am not much of a city girl and BU is right smack dab in the middle of Boston I had noooo idea. So I am hoping if anyone can help me find just as a good of school for my major with great academics ina more rural area. I know the usual Harvard, Brown, etc. But I am also looking for a school that has a slighty higher acceptance rate. Thank You, esp if you made it all the way to the bottton:)

Wisconsin has one of the top biochem programs in the US and is in a great college town–not a city. Lakefront campus but you can walk downtown too.

Cornell is great for anything bio and it’s in Ithaca. It is much more selective than BU though.

Also, if you’re still in the Boston area you should check out Boston College, Brandeis, and Tufts.

How far away are you willing to look?

Tufts is probably what you are looking for, but it is much more competitive than BU.

I agree on the big state schools in the middle of the country (Wisc mentioned above), but you would be taking a huge hit to prestige.

Boston College does not have an engineering school.

We need your stats to be able to suggest potential match schools.

I’m surprised no one has said Bowdoin seeing how it’s good for sciences and is in Maine.

Because the OP shouldn’t look at the LACs.

Nobody mentioned anything about engineering in this thread.

Another un-informative answer.

One earlier post, including good LACs: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-search-selection/539327-top-biochemistry-schools-anyone.html

An LAC is not going to offer the “research opportunities” the OP is looking for. Did you not read the original post?

Mt Holyoke (MA) Women

Wellesley (MA) Women

Clark (MA)

^Lol, what? Clark? Mount Holyoke? Read the OP - Research opportunities in Biochem. None of these schools will be able to provide this.

LACs that require a research thesis don’t have grad students crowding out the undergrads, and have the future PhD stats as evidence of excellent grad school prep. It’s not just the actual research done, but also showing that these grads already know how to do research.

Well, here’s a couple of links, MHC and Clark University (classified as National University)
both have research opportunities in biochemistry.

Informative, you are going to have to realize that times have changed, LACs and Regional Universities offer research opportunities to their undergrads!

It is not just the large National Universities that offer these research positions to their undergrads! At the smaller schools, there is more personal attention from the faculty members & no competition from the grad students! There is something to be said for that.

According to your Public Profile on CC, you are 63 years old, get with the times!
Do some research before you post!

lol, not 63.

And no, a little LAC is not going to provide the research opportunities of the top national universities. Sorry. They are cute schools though.

When you can find another biochem dept with this level of facilities and faculty let me know.

^lol, exactly. No LACs is going to have the resources of these mega-schools to support high-end research opprotunities, which it sounds like the OP wants.
