Yesterday, I went to my APA day and I think I picked the wrong classes; I did not schedule a math into my first semester. Now I have no intentions of majoring in a math, science, finance, computer science etc. major but the placement test I took placed me in precalc 115 and would like to take this class in the fall before I forget everything math-related come spring.

But I have a question: Can I take Precalc 111-112 as opposed to Precalc 115. I suck at math really without a doubt so a slower course I think would help me. Plus, even though I was placed in Precalc, can I still take Topics in Mathematics for the Liberal Arts Major?

One more question (I know I have already asked several): how hard are the 200-300 level Spanish classes? I intend to take Advanced Spanish Grammar as that is what I was placed in but I saw it was taught in Spanish :-( which I am worried about.

Thank you :-) !

Does your major require precalculus? Because I would HIGHLY suggest that if you really, really stink badly at math not to take precalculus at ALL. Save yourself!

Precalculus at Rutgers is one of the most difficult courses for some reason. I thought it was me, but I’ve heard it from A LOT of people. I dropped the class my freshman year. With the exception of a few kids in our class, the majority of us failed the first midterm. It didn’t help that we had a horrible TA on top of that for recitation.

Take Topics in Math for Liberal Arts instead. You don’t have to take precalculus unless your major requires it. If you do for your major, I suggest you take it next summer at your local community college. For the time being, I would sign up for Topics in Math for the Fall to complete the first part of the quantitative requirement.

The Spanish course question I can’t help answer for you. Sorry But do you plan on majoring/minoring in Spanish or are you doing it for your own good to learn the language? Maybe you should consider taking SPANISH CONVERSATION & COMPOSITION (940:203).

Here’s a link of Spanish courses offered at Rutgers:

Thank you so much! Wait, so I don’t have to take precalc even though I placed into that? That makes decisions so much easier.

Nope! You don’t have to take it. The whole point of placement is so that if you HAVE to take a course, they don’t put you in a higher level course like calculus yet until you master precalculus.

But definitely take TOPICS IN MATH instead of precalculus. If you want to take precalculus in the future, I highly suggest you take a summer course at a local community college :)
