A Different Kind of Chance (Help me Decide)

BUT, the good news is your profile, stats, etc. are excellent and you will have good options.

Unless you are being disingenously naiive (which I do NOT think is the case with you unlike others), you have a good chance to get into schols like Chicago, NDame, Georgetown, Tufts, etc.

You may genuinely like some of the less selective schools on your list, and that is fine, you just do not need to be so “safe” if you don’t want to be.

Another factor that has not been brought up is that if you are intentionally applying to schools that should easily admit you, maybe it is because you want or need a lot of financial assistnace? If that is the case, know that many of the Ivies and similar offer unlimited (up to full need) money for those who get in and need it, so you can afford to look at some fo those schools if you have big fiancial need.

If your parents want you to get a lot of merit $ and your need is not that great (on paper), you should do very well with your list.

To break it down, don’t be confused. Relax and be analytical. Use the tools at your disposal (like this site and the guide books, etc) to focus in on where your scores etc. are competitive. Do ot take your GC’s advice on face value. Aim higher by adding a few really selective schools to yor lisat, but keep some of the ones on your list that you actually like just in case you decide you would rather be at one of them, or in case you don’t get into the more restrictve schools.

If you limit yourself to 7 schools, I would keep 3 that are on your list now that you RESALLY like (not ones that you have there because you think you can get into them) and add 4 from the top LACs a mid level Ivy, and 1 or 2 from a Georgetown or Tufts or similar, depending on your likes. That would make a good, balanced list.

You will have great chopices, believe me.

just for clarificiation…what do people consider a lower to mid level ivy? would that be like penn and cornell???

because many of you suggest it, but i thought all ivies were pretty equal

Smith
Scripps
Pitzer
Pomona
Hampshire
University of Pittsburgh (as a safety)

It seems like you could get into a few better schools though; the only one that seems at your level is Pomona. However, that means you have a good chance at scholarships etc. for slightly worse schools (because all of these are so good)

please?

whatever you do, don’t cut out MIT as I think you have a much higher than average shot there.

You really need to decide for yourself which to cut out though. Do some research and see what actual students say about each of the colleges.

shameless bump

WOW… your stats are really good…

Union College in NY - idk I heard they’re really selective but my friend got in from the waitlist and he wasn’t the best student
University of Alabama probabbly in
Mount Holyoke probabbly in

THE REST(needs to be cute to six or seven)
Smith
Scripps
Pitzer
Franklin and Marshall <probabbly in
Tulane <might offer you a big scholarship
Pomona <probabbly in
Hampshire<probabbly in
MIT <reach
University of Pittsburgh <probabbly in
Baldwin Wallace <probabbly in

I would cut down on some of the schools you know you’re going to get into and go for some more reach schools. It’s pretty much a crapshoot anyways at hpysm and b/c they meet 100% of need, money shouldn’t be a problem.

I think youre in at most, MIT will probably want more math- and science-related stuff than you have, aim for higher schools like middle Ivies or top LACs.
