OK, so I know that this kinda thing comes up alot, but I'm just interested...

Lots of people say that Andover is stronger in Humanities/English and that Exeter is stronger in Maths/Science. Is that particularly true? If so, how?

I've heard the same thing. We just had our tour at Exeter yesterday and the science building was very impressive. There was a separate hall for each area of science: hall for chemistry, hall for biology, ect... We didn't see anything for math- our tour guide just kind of said " and over there is the math and history building" or something similar.

We haven't had our Andover tour yet... anyone seen their science facilities?

Haven't seen Exeter facilities so I can't compare. But, the Andover science building is only a few years old, and is very impressive. There may be a video about it on the Andover web site (there was, but I am not sure if it is still there). By the way, I was a biology major in college.

Here is a link to the description, with a link to photos.

You really can't go wrong with either Andover or Exeter -- and both their humanities and math/science programs will be excellent. But there are a few reasons that top math kids are particularly drawn to Exeter, giving Exeter its reputation in math/science: Mr. Feng, who teaches math at Exeter, is also the coach of the US math Olympiad team, and they also have the top math team; also, I believe that Exeter is the only BS that has a very unique way of teaching math, where students learn math only by the process of problem solving. (I believe there have been more detailed posts on Exeter's teaching method for math on this forum).

Brooklyn Guy,
Thanks for the link. Our Andover interview isn't til January so we haven't done too much research on Andover yet. That looks great! I'm sure my son will love that building too! It was interesting how his whole face lit up when he saw the science center at Exeter.

That's certainly the stereotype, but both schools offer an amazing education in all areas. I'd look at specific areas instead of overall reputation. Look at the course guides to see which schools offer the classes that interest you. I know that Andover has a great physics department and the computer science team has done well in various competitions.

I just interviewed at both, and got a personal tour at the Exeter Art Gallery- OH EM GEE.
Seperate studios for paitning, drawing, printmaking, photography, architecture!! I was blown away.
Andover didn't give me a tour of the arts facilities except the theatre, but the science building was nice. It is new, and it smelled strange- I don't know why I noticed that!
But my mother and I both agreed that we like Exeter's campus a little bit more, but both were extremely impressive!!
