A few Q's

I'll be attending McGill in the fall as a linguistics major, and I have a few questions.

What is the social life like? I've heard that McGill, despite being prestigious, is somewhat of a party school because of the lower drinking age and its being situated in Montreal. I don't like the idea of night life coming before academic life. On a related note, can you request a roommate or fill out some kind of form on your preferences?

Are you able to take courses in another faculties? I'd like to take a few computer programming courses, maybe even a minor, to supplement linguistics. But CS is in Science and Linguistics in Arts obviously. How does that work?

I'm also interested in taking a few Russian language courses so I can study abroad. Will I be able to fit that in with a major and minor? Has anyone here studied abroad via McGill, or in Russia?

Thank you.

1- Take a look at the “Ask a McGill Alumnsu” thread, especially the first few pages. this article linked earlier explains the party scena at McGill compared to American universities;

2 and 3- This is the link to the new Linguistics calendar page. They just redesigned the whole on line calendar. Beyond your major, you should have great freedom to take electives and build a minor.
[Minor Computer Science (24 credits) | Programs, Courses and University Regulations - McGill University](<a href=“Science Undergraduate Programs | 2010–2011 Programs, Courses and University Regulations - McGill University”>Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) - Minor Computer Science | 2010–2011 Programs, Courses and University Regulations - McGill University)

Click through the online calendar. There are likely some distribution requirements. I am not familiar with Arts and Science.

Sorry, forgot the linguistics link:
[Major Concentration Linguistics (36 credits) | Programs, Courses and University Regulations - McGill University](<a href=“Arts Undergraduate Programs | 2010–2011 Programs, Courses and University Regulations - McGill University”>Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) - Major Concentration Linguistics | 2010–2011 Programs, Courses and University Regulations - McGill University)

The faculty of arts uses a multi-track system where a (non-honors) major is 36 credits.

Thus you could combine 36 credits of linguistics with 36 credits of computer science and still have enough left over for a minor too.

There’s a 36 credit CS major under the Arts department, you should look into it.

Alternatively you can take the CS minor.

Edit:

Or you can just take a bunch of CS courses even if you’re in Arts.

Most people start with COMP-202 (Intro to Computing 1) and move on to COMP-250 (Intro to Computer Science) and so on as they see fit.

Also, the Russian (Slavic Studies) department is awesome, or at least I found it so.

They have a study abroad summer program, I believe with St-Petersburg, you should definitely talk to their profs.

Note that first year Russian is offered over the summer too now, and there are two versions of the courses, a regular track (3 credits / semester) and an accelerated track ( 6 credits / semester).

Thank you for the links tomofboston.

I appreciate the info PerpetualStudent. I’m glad I’ll be able to incorporate everything into my degree. I may double minor in CS and Russian. A summer in St.Petersburg was actually exactly what I was hoping for.

https://home.mcgill.ca/russian/summer/</a></p>

Edit: Might want to look into what this suspension of the program means though, hopefully it’s only temporary.

Good luck.
