A few questions about Cal Poly

I am a transfer student from a local JC and I was recently accepted to Cal Poly. I have not accepted admission yet and I am a bit nervous about getting housing. Does anyone know how hard it is to get housing at Cal Poly? It looks like transfer students only choice of on-campus housing is the Cerro Vista Apartments and it’s on a lottery basis. Also, what is the general atmosphere of the college? Are the students and locals friendly? How is the safety on campus? etc. Any general opinions and tips on Cal Poly would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Cerro Vista is mostly first-year students, although some upperclassmen live there as well. Do you have the option of Poly Canyon Village? That seems to be the preferred housing for upperclassmen.

There shouldn’t be any problem getting housing on campus. There were apartments available throughout the year when my son lived in Cerro Vista last year.

Students and locals are very friendly. Check out the farmers’ market on Thursday nights, where they close several blocks downtown for stalls of fresh produce, prepared foods and local arts & crafts.

There is plenty of housing in Poly Canyon. It is beautiful up there. Housing is brand new. There are restaurants, a general store, a swimming pool, parking. Also very safe and within walking distance to campus.

Thanks! Actually, transfer students/upperclassmen aren’t able to live in Poly Canyon. Cerro Vista is for upperclassmen and while it is possible to request to live in PC, it isn’t recommended by the campus.

I don’t see why it wouldn’t be recommended for a transfer to live in poly canyon and only in cerro vista. I’ve lived in both and they are basically the same (experience wise). And poly canyon was made for upperclassmen, so why wouldn’t it be recommended for them to live there? That makes no sense. Cerro vista is generally a mix of freshmen and continuing students, although when I lived there last year it was probably at least 80-90% freshman. They also used to put transfer students in one of the buildings in poly canyon, but I guess now they’re putting more of them in cerro. There is a lot of housing on campus, and there usually are some empty rooms even during the school year, so securing a spot should not be difficult.

Here is the website. It shows only Cerro Vista as an option for transfers and I also spoke with someone in the housing department who confirmed it.

My kid just got accepted to Cal Poly and I called the housing department. I was assured that housing is good on campus and I would not worry one bit about safety, etc. You just got into one of the top schools in the nation. The kids are great. the academics are challenging. You’ll most likely graduate with a job if you apply yourself. Congratulations – the last of your worries should be about housing. You are in and that is what counts. Sign up for a dorm room immediately, then relax knowing that you did a great job and were rewarded with a spot at a top school. You are going to LOVE it at Cal Poly!

Only guessing, but I imagine they try to keep the transfer students together so they can offer support and programs to help mix with other students, etc. My son is at Cal Poly (my daughter considering) and I have to say they do an awesome job getting the students to meet each other, learn about the campus and the town. For freshmen, WOW week is awesome - be sure your student attends. I think the have something similar for transfer students. Son’s at Poly Canyon now. They always have opportunities for little mixers, etc posted around the complex. Compared to some of the other schools we visited, I’d say dorms are OK - but certainly acceptable. Only issue for my son was food. Not the quality per se, but the quantity. He’s 6’1 and very active. Had a hard time getting enough to eat. It’s not all you can eat like the UC’s. Usually had to keep cereal and oatmeal in the room.

my daughter and I checked this craigslist ad out a few weeks ago for Cal poly student housing … noticed it is still up.

Go Poly!

You’re kidding, right? Atascadero??? I’m thinking this is spam…

lol. that is funny. But most students will not want to commute that far away anyways.

Hi, i’m actually a transfer student who was admitted to cal poly for spring quarter and i got housing at poly canyon. I’m guessing this change was sudden, but they offer the ability to change housing options once they given you what you got so maybe you can live a poly canyon ?

I’m a transfer student too, and would prefer to be with other transfers if possible. I guess I’ll try to check out the housing situation when I go up there next month.
