Hi!
So I’m a high school senior so not entering grad school yet but I had a few questions.
1.-So I’m from Mexico and was wondering if going to a good public state flagship, considered one of the best in Mexico but not sure worldwide, would affect my chances of getting into a good grad school outside of Mexico, maybe in Europe or the U.S. Money wouldn’t be so much of a problem as they offer good scholarships from the govt. to study or another private one which has sent people to grad school
2.-Can one work in the country while they are studying?
3.-How much time after your bachelors did you start your masters? If you were working were you only part-time students or does it affect much?
Thanks!
If you have strong academics and test scores plus good letters of reference, then you will be competitive for graduate programs. if you have your own funding, you will also be very attractive. Working in the U.S. as an international student is restricted. You would have to work on campus or take Curricular Practical Training to work outside for a limited period of time. I cannot tell you about Europe but it is likely there are restrictions there too.
Foreign Graduate students in the US can also sometimes qualify for RA, TA, GA assistantships in their departments.
For a Masters degree it is less likely that you will get an Assistantship than if you are a Ph.D. student.
Thanks for your help! I’m still deciding where I want to go and even what I’m going to study but since I want to focus on research, getting a masters is important to me.
