A few questions to SCA students

SCA is School of Cinematic Art so not to worry, knm1001. They send our kids a separate offer of admission which needs to be returned. One more form!

bmom, I don't know about the scholarship return deadline. I might suggest calling the USC FinAid office tomorrow and perhaps offering to fax it to them if they need it sooner. btw, you are international? Might I ask where from?

hi madbean, we are from Canada, so I don't understand why mail takes so long. my son tried calling the person that we sent the form to and emailed her too but she never replied. he emailed his admission counselor also but she hasn't replied either. i'll ask him to email finaid again and maybe call them on Friday. I really think that they should have allowed people to accept online to save themselves all these frantic emails and phone calls, don't you think?

sorry to confuse you knm1001.

No problem, bmom. I just want to be sure I dot all me I's and cross all my t's so that admission/scholarship is not taken away because of some technicality.

We were at a reception last night and I spoke to someone in finaid. She said the scholarship acceptance form has a postmark deadline of May 1st, not a May 1st date of receipt, so as long as you send the form by the date it's ok if USC receives it after May 1.

How was the reception, Sequoia? Hear any new details? Any USC or SCA gossip? lol

thanks Sequoia, but I still worry that it is lost in the mail. will wait a couple more days and then either ask if we can fax it in or email an attachment.

madbean; this was a Trojan League reception for admitted students in our general area. It was held in a private home (beautiful), hosted by Alumni. The admissions officer for this area was there, as well as a couple of finaid people.
Best, there were present students to welcome the new ones and answer questions, as well as a USC acapella group who entertained us (they were fabulous). The reception was very nice, very welcoming.

that's so nice that you can attend the reception, Sequoia. It must be nice to know that they take such good care of the admitted students and especially nice that there are current students to talk to.

bmom, they hold these receptions in various locations/cities where I suppose there are alumni organizations. Perhaps there's one in Canada (are you in BC?), or maybe they hold something extra specifically for internationals connected to their orientation?

They hold one in our area too. D forgot to attend.

according to them, the USC "mafia" is supposed to be everywhere so maybe there will be one for us. And yes, we're from BC, how did you guess Sequoia?

I knew you were in Canada and vaguely recall from another post somewhere that you might be in Vancouver.

bmom,
There are alumni living in Vancouver, but at this time there is no organized SC alumni club established in British Columbia. The closest one to you is in Seattle, Washington.

thanks Georgia Girl!

and Sequoia, I think you must have esp or something cause I don't think I mentioned Vancouver at all on these posts. Or else, maybe we met at Explore.

I think rainmama attended the Seattle reception a few weeks back. My s and I went to the one held in Pasadena, CA two weeks ago and it was very cool. No USC singers at ours, but a great way for the new students to meet other admittees as well as current students and alumni. As mentioned, the SC admissions rep who spoke gave some cool stats about this year's admitted class. After all the work and worry during the application and the waiting period, these alumni sponsored receptions (and orientation and the first week activities) are all about celebration and accomplishment and pride.

But while our family has been celebrating, I hope that all the students who have been posting to this forum over the past few months, but will not be at USC this fall, are finding their new schools to be equally exciting. In my happiness, I don't want to ignore that others are facing different outcomes. Some are choosing a different school that fits them better, but others might be adjusting to schools they had not at first thought they'd be attending. You know--I don't want to be insensitive to all.

Since this is a SCA thread, I am reminded that I know of many kids who did not get the news they had hoped for and they are all (the ones I know personally) amazing kids with so much talent!!

well said, madbean, my sentiments exactly

I don't think Palm Springs has any of these alumni gatherings to welcome the new students. Do they send you a notice if they set one up? Or did you inquire? It'd be nice to meet a few people before fall (although we will be gone a lot of the summer).

suenos, they held the alumni receptions in several cities (Pomona, Irvine, San Diego Co, etc) but none in the desert communities this year. Is your D coming to the Admit day event on campus this Sunday? There will be a lot of the same opportunities to meet students (current and incoming) there, I'm sure.

suenos,
There is a SC Palm Springs Alumni Club. I have no idea if they have or have not planned a new student reception. Could you e-mail the USC website and find the alumni section and ask about a contact for the club? These are really fun events and hope you can attend if an event is planned.
GG

Thanks, Georgia Girl, I think I'll do that.

Madbean, my daughter is out of the country right now but when she returns it would be awesome to meet some graduates who might have some good advice for her come orientation day.
