a few questions.....

1) study space - besides the library & dorm room, where do people find study space?
2) what is social life like for freshman guys?
3) do fraternities tend to have off campus apartments to use as a home base for parties or are the all ticket parties at some local establishment? do freshman guys get in?
4) assuming no car.....where is there to walk to get something to eat? any drugstore or grocery within walking distance?....or does it require train to bryn mawr or somewhere like that?
thanks for any help you can give me!

Parent here, so take it for what it’s worth:

 1. Besides the library and dorm lounges, I know my son used the dining hall for studying freshman year. The dining hall on South campus is open as long as the Donahue Market is open (1:00am).
 2. Since this is a parent’s perspective, all I can say is that my son seemed to have more “social” opportunities than I thought were necessary freshman year; he seemed very happy, tho.
 3. Again, this is only hearsay, but yes, fraternities have off-campus houses and apartments and there are plenty of parties. Ticket events are also held at commercial establishments. Freshmen do attend both types of parties.
 4. Villanova runs a shuttlebus service 7 days a week through local commercial areas. This gives you access to banks, drugstores, grocery store and, on weekends, the King of Prussia mall. The SEPTA train stops on campus also give access to Philadelphia and everything in between. One anecdote…guys took the train and also shared taxis to the nearest Gamestop last year for a midnight game release. No car freshman and sophomore year doesn’t seem to be a huge problem.

Another Parent here , my 2 cents worth

1) study space - besides the library & dorm room, where do people find study space?

You can reserve a classroom online for studying for yourself or for a group.Students pull allnighters in Driscoll and Bartley prepping for finals.

2) what is social life like for freshman guys?

Freshman girls have access to most off campus social activities , Freshman boys can be a bit tougher and helps to go to events with girls.

3) do fraternities tend to have off campus apartments to use as a home base for parties or are the all ticket parties at some local establishment? do freshman guys get in?

Off campus apartments are the home base for parties , most are a short cab ride or 30 minute walk from campus. If you want to party , you can can find one.

4) assuming no car…where is there to walk to get something to eat? any drugstore or grocery within walking distance?..or does it require train to bryn mawr or somewhere like that?

Bryn Mawr is walkable for restaurants 1- 1.5 miles , there is a CVS drug store about a mile away and a Genuardi’s grocery store about 2 miles away in Radnor. Again short cab ride or long walk.

Study space is easy to come by. Most people go to the library or work in their dorm, but there are always people in the lounges working on schoolnights. Also, there is the math center or writing center that you can get help or just work on things. There are also study spaces in most buildings available. I’m an engineer and I know there are rooms in CEER and White available.

2 and 3. Obviously it is easier for freshman girls to get in, but freshman guys will get in as well. It’s just a matter of going with girls to make the numbers better. Honestly, guys can get into the parties whenever they want to, they just have to make more effort. However, there are plenty of other things to do on and off campus if you aren’t into the partying scene. There are always free events going on, you just have to watch for them.

Most freshman get either 19 meals a week or unlimited so they mainly stay at the dining hall. There is also the sparket, which is a small convenience store on south campus, and 2nd storey, which is a pretty large convenience store on west. On the weekends there are shuttles to all kinds of places in the area and also it’s really not that bad of a walk.
