A Few Questions

Waiting is terrible. AP scores will be available soon and I'm waiting for something from Lawrence. When will I find out where I'll be living and stuff like that?

Are Freshman Studies professors assigned randomly?

Also, when are auditions for the jazz band? Is it better to take lessons, get used to classes, and audition later on or do it right away?

Thanks.

Supposedly we start getting stuff in July to register for classes. But housing won't come intil August. Or so I heard.

Lawrence sends an e-mail address and forms for registering for classes sometime early in July. The housing/roommate assignment comes much later (from what I remember).

FS professors are randomly assigned.

Auditions for Jazz Band are very early in the year, probably a week after Freshmen arive. Definitely audition at the beginning of the year. It's much easier to drop a jazz combo or jazz band than it is to get into one.

Sorry, just a few more questions:

What bands can non-conservatory students play in?

Is there a place to store a trombone outside of the dorm room?

So, speaking of all LU things...

Has anyone else gotten their course selection guides/Hamlet book?

I've already read Hamlet, but it couldn't hurt to read it again.

Yes, I got it this morning.

I think Hamlet is taught in many schools during senior year. It'll be interesting to see the differences between high school and college in how they teach it.

"What bands can non-conservatory students play in?"

Any band.

"Is there a place to store a trombone outside of the dorm room?"

Yes, you can get a band locker at the beginning of the year.

Hamlet is the summer reading assignment?!?!? That's a far cry from what my class had last summer (If On A Winter's Night by Calvino).

I know. I saw that on the LU website, so I looked the book up on Amazon and it looked really interesting. Now I'm thinking of reading Calvino's book just for fun.

Calvino seems to be a love it or hate it book. Even if you don't like it, it's worth reading because it's probably the only book that the vast majority of the Lawrence campus is extremely familiar with...it comes up a lot.

There was a poem by Elizabeth Bishop on the English AP test, but we're not going to be reading her either. I think Hamlet beats Macbeth though.

Damn. That means I can't sell my Bishop book (I wasn't a huge fan of her).

Sorry about all of the questions, but I just have one more: what classes in philosophy have you taken? I'm thinking about taking either Symbolic Logic with Ryckman or Intro to Philosophy: Knowing and Valuing with Dreher. Thanks.

If you haven't been here yet, check it out: http://lawrence.edu/dept/philosophy/
Ryckman has a webpage with all sorts of stuff and Dreher has syllabi posted.

I took Symbolic Logic with Ryckman winter term last year. I absolutely loved the class. By far my favorite class I've taken at LU (albeit I've only been here a year). I love both math and philosophy, the material was very interesting, but most importantly Ryckman is a GREAT teacher (I'm seriously considering him as my advisor).

I considered an intro philosophy class (like Knowing and Valuing) but the issue was that it does not count towards a philosophy major. However, I've talked to both Ryckman and Dreher and they recommend philosophy majors take an intro (other than logic). I felt comfortable skipping the intro because I read a fair amount of philosophy outside of class and I decided to read the texts covered in the intro class on my own. I haven't taken a class with Dreher, but he's my current advisor but he's a great guy; he's very funny; he's also a little intimidating at first.

If you know you want to do philosophy, I recommend taking logic and maybe an upper level class in addition (a visiting prof is offering quite a few philosophy history classes that look interesting and probably won't be as intimidating as some of the other upperlevels). My only word of caution would be not to jump right into an upper level Dreher class (I think the only one open next year is Morality and Self Interest). He's an extremely tough grader when it comes to writing and I found that my paper writing improved and changed greatly throught my first year.

If you're not sure you want to do philosophy, take the Dreher intro and the logic class if you have time or are mathematically inclined.

I hope this is helpful. If you or any other incoming Freshman have any questions feel free to post them here or send me a message on AIM at specht1987.

Since this thread is already here....

Lawrence sent freshmen our e-mail addresses, but no passwords. What's up with that? When will we get our passwords?

According to the website:

How do I get my network-e-mail password and/or my Voyager pin?
Account information is mailed to new students in the summer housing letter. It is printed on a sheet entitled "Student Computer Account Information". This is sent in early July.

I'm looking forward to it.

Me too.

I looked through the LJ Lawrence community archives, and apparently, people got their room info in July last year as well.

Here's hoping to big LU packets coming in the mail this month.

I got the housing and email stuff in the mail today. I'm in Colman Hall.

I'm in Sage. Are you on facebook?

TSSSIL what room are you in Sage?

I'm up on the 4th floor. 423 I think.

I'm on the third floor. 322
