Yeah, I'm planning on marching next year. Spare me the band camp jokes [I'm a flutist/piccoloist, I've heard it].

Has anyone on here been involved in the band? Concert bands even?

They seem to be really slow in responding. It's ridiculous. I have to return my piccolo at the end of the school year and I don't know how soon I can get my own, so I need to make my audition tape soon.

When you audition, how soon do you know if you've made it?

your not a band nerd until you've heard the band camp comment told to you like two thousand times............ but anyway, i plan on being in the band next year as well. im not majoring in music or anything but i enjoy playing the saxophone and i love football and i figure this is a way i can do both things. (well do the one, and watch the other). does anyone know when the audition dates are. im having trouble getting ahold of this information. also does anyone know any info about the Jazz band.

I am a freshman this year and I was involved in the Marching Band and Symphonic band Fall semester, and I am now in Symphonic Band again for Spring semester. The auditions for marching band are a joke, they take anyone. As far as Wind Symphony and Symphonic band, you have to audition, and you actually have to be good lol. Then there are Monday Night and Wednesday Night Concert bands which do not require auditions for entry, only for chair placements. Marching band is a good experience, but I do not feel it is worth it for 1 credit. It takes up so much time. I am not doing it again.

I am in the marching band and I have been for the three years I have been at UF. I play trombone and I have participated in every ensemble pretty much.

Auditions are pretty simple. You just play the fight song and scales. They normally accept anybody that can play since they always need more people.

The times you wrote for practice are correct. It take a lot of time, but you will start school with knowing lots of people so thats a plus.

Any more questions I should be able to answer.

Auditions for Wind Symphony and Symphonic Band are much more difficult. To play in one, you must audition for both. They take the better players in Wind Symphony and the others go to Symphonic Band. There is also a large number that does not make it in.

If you can, contact the head professor in charge of the instrument you are playing. They can provide you with the music that you will need.

The way the dorm thing works is that the director will try and talk to the housing department to let you into your dorm that you will have in the fall. I think this worked last time, but the earliest move-in date is the first day of band camp, so they may tell you just to find some time between sessions, but that will be no time, so hopefully the director will help you out.

I have never sent in a tape, but from what I have heard, the band office is pretty efficient with sending out messages. We have just hired a new secretary and she seems pretty much on top of things. They will let you know pretty quickly. The good thing is, if you can play your instrument, you are in marching band.

I've sent three E-mails. One was responded to with complete disregard for my questions. I'm not impressed with the band office lol.

I want to send in a CD, but I don't know if they'll be down. It's just an easier medium for recording, and mayyyybe the piccolo will sound a little less obnoxious on a CD than a tape.

Yeah, they accept CDs. I have not talked with the new secretary, but I guess it depends on who responded to you. Sorry they were so disrespectful to you. They may be bogged down with the upcoming season.

I believe they will pay for it, but only the first time you take it. Anytime after that, no. The good thing is, the music department will give a $100 check back at the end of the year to counter that. They call it a "Returning Band Member Scholarship."

For every instate student, the coarse costs about $100. You will have to take that cost, but by the end of the year, you will get the check. So for a semester, you will be down $100, but it will come back. Remember, this is only for if you return. You need to pay $100 for your first year.

Its a lot better than OOS. I pay $700, but only get $100 back each year, so I am losing $600 every year =(

Ah, very cool. So assumidely, Bright Futures will cover the first year and after that the "band scholarship" will do it. Regardless, it's cheaper than high school marching was, so yay!

That sucks that your cost is so high!!! It must be pretty awesome though if you're willing to pay every year.
