A few (ridiculously easy) writing questions...

I am a writing noob. Please enlighten me.

In 1922 African American educator Anna Julia Cooper earned a doctorate at sixty-six, and this is when most people consider retirement.

b) an age at which most people consider retirement
e) which is considered retirement by most people.

Correct answer is b.

"e" cannot be the correct answer because the subordinated clause is ambiguous and does not explicitly state a subject (either can be the doctorate degree or the age of sixty six), right?

Next...

According to 1974 census reports, the population of Tokyo was larger than that of any other city in the world except New York.

a) same
b) the population of Tokyo was larger than that of other cities in the world except that of New York.

Correct Answer: a

"b" is not the correct answer because there is an incorrect comparison, right? "that of..." is already used in the last clause and can not be repeated for the "..New York" part because its an exception for the cities not for the whole statement, right?

hmmm..i didn't have those.

they weren't on today's exam. I'm just asking from my practice PSAT exams.

correct, nice job explaining your own answers.

^actually i got these two wrong. :(. As I reviewed my test (after looking at the answers), I realized my mistake, and I'm just posting here to make sure my new reasoning isn't faulty.

In 1922 African American educator Anna Julia Cooper earned a doctorate at sixty-six, and this is when most people consider retirement.

b) an age at which most people consider retirement
e) which is considered retirement by most people.

i think its b because when they say "which is considered retirement by most people." it is referring to doctorate, which of course doesnt make sense. Because "at sixty-six" is a prepositional phrase in "earned a doctorate at sixty-six," so by saying "an age at which" with b) they are making sure that it is clear they are talking about age. i hope that makes sense.
