A few stupid/important questions! Help -> Please <- :)

Hey hey!
Applied as a transfer for fall 09, dont know if im in yet, but would like to know a bit of info and was hoping you could help me out! BIOLOGY Major!

MOST IMPORTANTLY - How hard/easy is it to get a research possibilities? Do professors like to do this ? Are they reluctant? Do I need a great GPA, or do I need to know the prof?

Now for the rest -
Are there a lot of mosquitos? :P Many?

What does the tap water taste like? I hate having to buy water in the store because the tap water is gross!

How expensive is food? Are there any big food places like sams club or costco around?

How is the transportation?
Is there a bus available ? How do I get around LA? What about the airport?

How much does it cost to see a LA Lakers or LA Kings game ?

What kind of cool stuff can you do around LA? What things can you do more than once?(ex. museum, beach, movies), What can you do once? (ex. see a cool building.. :P )

Yes I'm serious! These are small things that can actually matter a lot, at least to me.. :P So please help me out!

Thanks!

Plenty of my Bio major friends were able to get research opportunities. The keys to that are to go to office hours freshman year, so that you get to know your professors, and to read and replay to the emails with research ideas that you will get from the Bio listserv.

There are some mosquitoes here, but not many. I have rarely gotten bitten on campus. There isn’t much standing water downtown for them to breed in- all of the fountains are cleaned and constantly moving.

The tap water has won several taste tests- some people really like it, some don’t. Many have a Brita water filter, which easily can fit inside a fridge, and keeps you from wasting the plastic and money it takes to get water bottles.

Nearby campus there is Superior, which is a relatively cheap grocery store, and Ralphs, which isn’t quite as cheap, but is better quality. You will need a car or to use public transport to get to a Costco.

There are many threads about transportation out right now. Use the search function to look them up.

I have no idea how much that costs- you can probably get some cheap tickets last minute- we are very close to the staples center.

There is tons of cool stuff to do in LA. When the new gold line opens up in 2010, it will be even easier to get around. Museums are right across the street, the beach is about 20-30 minutes away, you’ve got Hollywood, the Grove, Melrose, etc for shopping and hanging out. Tons of things to do. Look at a travel website like Trip Advisor to see what they have to do in LA.

My son paid $14 for a Kings Ticket

Nikara - thank you for a wonderful post! Even adressed the mosquito part!
Helps a lot! I am transferring though so I guess I cant get the same connections, but will try and I’m a pretty sociable person so it’ll probably work out, as long as there are spots available :)

ebay - haha thats sweet, did he get it on ebay? :P

hey guys!

one more question!

are you allowed to long/skateboard on campus?

thanks!

When I visited USC last year, I did see students skateboarding.

There are definitely lots of skateboarders and longboarders.

awesome :D
