I just received my admissions letter and on the inside I read that I am in the running for the Presidential Sxholarship. I am really glad I got this, but does that mean I do not have a chance for the Trustee Scholarship? I simply ask because I'm concerned about meeting the cost. I applied as a Questbridge Finalist, and I also applied for financial aid. I submitted the CSS Profile and the FAFSA. The Questbridge site tells me to mail my parents taxes to USC, but the site tells me to wait unless requested. The more I think about seeing myself there, the more I want to go, but I'm concerned about this. Will USC provide me with additional aid outside of merit scholarships? Any help would be great.

Congratulations on your acceptance, your Presidential Scholarship candidacy, and your Questbridge finalist status!

Scholarship info here to address your Trustee scholarship question: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-southern-california/1597366-tips-insights-observations-and-scoop-on-usc-s-top-merit-scholarships-p1.html

USC will request that you upload tax information. Be sure you have established your USConnect account https://usconnect.usc.edu/ . If a tab appears to upload taxes and you have them done, go ahead and upload. If the tab isn’t there, wait for the request.

Merit scholarships can be coordinated with need-based aid to fully meet your USC-determined need. Note that USC will determine your need using the CSS/Profile which considers assets the FAFSA does not including home equity, so the amount you are expected to contribute may differ from your FAFSA EFC (and by "differ,’ I mean it will probably be more…).

Good luck!

@alamemom, Thank you! I was accepted to USC for a major in biochemistry. I applied with that major, but wasnt sure if I really wanted to go into medicine. It seems that this will affect me in the interview, but if I enroll, could I change my major? I feel myself being pulled towards a major in math. And if I get the scholarship and do change my major, will I loose the scholarship?

^No-- you will keep your scholarship even if you change majors.

It is ok (and common) to be unsure about your major and this won’t be held against you.

Agreed. If it’s any consolation, at last year’s convocation for incoming freshman the head of the University pointed out that students shouldn’t fear changing majors and that his daughter did three times college doesn’t lock you in. USC is just looking for the best and brightest and most students don’t have a firm lock on future career goals even if they choose a major. So go, have fun, and use some of your electives to explore the possibilities.! (And congrats!)

Thank you guys so much! If you could help me with another question. I sent my fafsa, but I just looked on the USC page, and it says that the fafsa processor was unable to confirm my us citizenship. What is that?

I’m worried because I just realized this. So maybe all the schools I sent the fafsa too have the same error, and it’s almost March.

The issue is with the FAFSA rather than with the individual schools (and yes, it is likely affecting all your schools). I see that you were born in the Balkans. So you are either an eligible non-citizen or a US citizen - right? If an eligible non-citizen go back to your SAR and re-check that you entered your 8 or 9 digit alien registration number correctly. If it is wrong, log into FAFSA, correct it and your issue will be resolved.

If you are a citizen, it may be that your status has not yet been updated with the Social Security Administration (SSA). Contact the SSA at 1-800-772-1213 or visit the Social Security Administration’s Web site at www.ssa.gov

https://fafsa.ed.gov/help/fotw15a.htm

If those two ideas don’t help, use the FAFSA help number to figure it out. For USC at least, your FAFSA submission date will be on-time and your aid will not be reduced even if it takes some time to straighten out :)

Good luck.

I guess it missed be that I need to update my status. My mom became a citizen in 2008, thereby making me a citizen as well. I have to wait until tomorrow, as it seems the SSA website is down for tonight. Thank you so much!

Excuse me @alamemom, but how do I update my citizenship status on the SSA website. I need ti be 18 to creat an account.

we had that problem last year we had to go in person to the SSA office and fill out a form for D and additionally send a copy of her US passport to all the colleges she applied. Unfortunately for naturalized citizens the SSA does not update automatically.

Ok thank you!

I went to the SSA and I updated my information with them. The lady that healed me told me the FAFSA and my school should update automatically. Is this true? Does anyone know if I have to do anything else?

Email USC financial aid to update them - tell them that you have contacted SSA and ask USC to let you know if there is anything else they need from you. Rani9933 has a great idea to send copies of your passport to the schools to which you sent the FAFSA.

Good job getting it taken care of so quickly!

USC sent me an email explaining the documents I needed to provide. I filled them all outl but they also want my parents tax returns for 2013. My dad said they would be ready by Monday or Tuesday. Should I contact the financial office and tell them that. And USC still wants me to confirm my citizenship. Should I email them on how I should do this before I make a copy of my us passport?
