It looks like mamy private colleges have some sort of scholarship, like the $15K Presidential, $10K Dean, 5K XXX etc. In general, do they specifically designate the scholarship for tuition? We have an employer tuition grant, and the amount is dependent on whether the scholarship is tuition designated or undesignated. Our grant would be reduced dollar for dollar if the scholarship is specifically for tuition purpose. I know it's very general question but our children are not about to go to college yet.

Hmmm…it may depend on the college.

The ones I know are used for tuition only. But, if these scholarships are not for full tuition, then can’t your employer grants make up the difference?

How much are your employer tuition grants for children? Aren’t they usually for smallish amounts - like $5k per year?

My sons received a number of these scholarships from private colleges and none were designated for tuition only. They simply reduced the overall cost of attendance.

When it gets closer to the time your children are applying for colleges, you can check out the specifics of each college to see what their policies are.

My daughter received a couple of these from two different schools and they were restricted to tuition. It seems to depend on the school.
