I found myself twice in the video on the Academy website, once on a computer during a glider workshop and once running up the hill at the end of "Doolie for a day"

hum, I see three of you kids facing the camera. So, I can narrow my search to find you? :)

you could quite easily, but I'm not sure I want you to know, oh well, I'm the one in the back, facing the camera

Excellent. Monty Burns finger movement :) no worries, less the hair I will never know.

Hornet your going to have them so scared they won't get off the bus. :)

I bet under that Hornet disguise he's an ol' softy :)...right Hornetboy?...urrr, I mean guy....I do know for sure there's some NICE approachable 4's! My D got a very sweet email today from one of them!

Thanks, ds! She was thrilled and has already responded. Okay, sorry for the hi-jack, on to SS talk.

hornet's buzz, has usually been bigger than his sting so far, but he will be in a different role this summer. Cadre right, or are you doing the EMT thing? Either way I am sure he will be tough, but fair. I do think I remember something about Cadet Princess on envelopes last summer though. He, Raimius and G4C will do their best to watch for your new 4 dig's...Now Eagle has always seemed much more intimidating.

Glad to hear potter reached out. She has been busy, and her roommate has been under the weather.

The summer seminar video's are always a thrill, and a challenge finding your attendee in such a blur.

shhhh, don't let them know! I will be an EMT ds. But, my friends in 2nd BCT would like me to come visit the new Tiggers for some good ole' fashioned fun.

Hornet don't forget the Tibia is on the outside, or is that the Fibula, darned A&P....Oh yeah and was that a simple fracture or compound, open or closed. Have fun with it...lot's of shin splints during first BCT.

Is anyone else having trouble with the SS video from academyadmissions.com... I tried opening and saving it on my Mac as well as the PC downstairs, and no dice.

hornetguy, just thought I'd clarify, I will not be cutting my hair any shorter, as I believe the requirement for females is that it cannot pass the edge of the collar

yeah, how does that work? we don't have to have our hair cut if it's short enough, do we?

I talked to a 95 grad who said she got hers cut short before I-day, but they gave her a chop job anyway "just to spite" her. Has that changed?

I'm not necessarily attached to my hair or anything, just curious.

I have a friend in her 2nd year of AFROTC, and she told me that they can keep their hair long but when in uniform it has to be pinned up so as to not touch the collar. When her hair is down it is a few inches past her shoulders but when it is up it's in a nice little bun. Not sure if USAFA has the same standards.

I'm pretty sure that all female Basics must have hair that does not reach below the collar for BCT, then after BCT, or maybe recognition, it can be longer as long as it's put up in uniform. One of the current cadets probably knows more about this than me.

No, females are allowed to have long hair as long as it can "quickly" be put up in a bun no more than 3 inches thick and does not touch the bottom of the collar.

However, as a caveat to that, (sad considering this is a guy speaking) many of the girls that kept it long got horrid rashes. A combination of always keeping the hair taught in a bun, little time to shower, shampoo and oils not being washed out led to the pores becoming irritated and you could visibly see a deep red rash on their scalp. Unless you are absolutely in love with your hair, having it shorter may help!

Afterwards you will be fine. Two of my females friends in the squad have their hair down to their waists! They can put it up no problem. Lots of girls will also do french braids and other ways to keep it in regs.

phew. I need to go pick up my man card off the floor. It flew away talking about females hair....

thanks hornet, good advice :P you sound like an expert

Ok.. I'm a girl and went through this already so here's my advice:

DO NOT CUT YOUR HAIR. Seriously, it makes things much more difficult and time-consuming in basic, contrary to popular opinion. In my basic flight, 4 of us girls had long hair and 4 had short hair. All of the girls with short hair had problems with it getting in their face (especially out in Jack's Valley) and they would get yelled at for "making an extraneous movement" (ha :)) to try and fix it. Believe me, it's a total pain to have short hair in basic. The girls with short hair would spend a ton of time trying to put it up into a french braid or something so that it would stay out of their way, which is next to impossible and also really time consuming. DO NOT cut your hair... you'll regret it.

This being said, you need to make sure that you can put your hair in a tight bun in a reasonable amount of time. It will stay out of your face that way and it will last all day. I have pretty long hair and I never had a problem with getting boils or anything on my neck. There was maybe one girl in my whole squad (there are 10 squadrons in basic) who had that problem and they just looked like little pimply things. The only reason I noticed that she even had them was that she stood right in front of me in noon meal formation during first BCT. There should be enough time for you to wash your hair. During first BCT we showered twice a day, once after morning PT and once in the evening before we went to bed. We only got like 2 minutes (the faster the better... everyone hates the girls who take forever) and I never washed my hair then, but I always had enough time after TAPS to wash it in the sink. In Jack's Valley... you will just be dirty anyway. The whole time. So you'll probably wash your hair every few days, and honestly, your hair will look and feel a lot more gross if it's short.

If you wash your hair at night (or at least get it wet) and then put it up in a bun at the base of your neck, it will be super tight and will still be perfectly in regs when you wake up to pounding on your door the next morning. I'm really glad I didn't cut my hair because it was much easier to have it long and keep it out of the way. Your preference, but I know a lot of girls who cut their hair before basic wish they had known it was better to keep it long.

One last thing on hair... Make sure you have it IN REGS when you come on inprocessing day. Don't come with your hair down like I did. If your hair is down, you'll get shuffled into a room with really mean female upperclassmen who stand around you yelling at you and taunting you for wanting to keep your hair. They give you 30 seconds to put it in regs (with NO flyaways) and it's almost impossible to do when you're already really stressed out and nervous. Most girls that got shuffled into that room ended up getting in line for the barber.

haha. That's hornet, regulations extrordinare. Just kidding. ;)

Most of the females in my basic flight had their hair down to collar length (well, I think that's right), and they all said it never gave them any problems. Each person is different though.

But since redhead kind'a knows a little more first hand, I'd go with what she says.

Well, thanks for the info, but I've had mine well above my collar since freshman year (I cut it when I got tired of putting it up for tennis) so I think I'll plan on just keeping it short.

Well, two sides to each story. :) Then again, I'm surprised they didn't try to quench the fire.

KIDDING! Love you redhead. :) ;)
