I am interested in visiting Exeter, Andover, SPS, and maybe Deerfield and Hotchkiss. When would be a good time to visit them to get a feel for the schools? Would mid-October (before I get my SSAT scores) be too early?

I would prefer to visit at a time that isn't during classes at my school, but is during classes at the other schools. So what do you think?

That sounds like a good plan. You don't want to vist once the snow season starts because that can lead to travel problems. They don't need your SSAT scores for the interview. Schedule your interviews now because some dates -- like Columbus Day weekend -- fill up fast. Be sure to visit when school is in session, and don't schedule more than 2 visits a day. Remember that your tour guide will probably submit an evaluation to Admissions. Good luck!

if you can, schedule one a day. Two a day for a couple days can get hectic and a bit stressful. I'm still when we will go to visit, but I really would like my d to feel the weather. Comming from Texas, I want to make sure she understands cold. heck the other morning it was like 68 degrees and she/we were cold. It was a morning without low humidity and it felt a bit chilly lol.

The weather isn't a real problem for me. In fact, I live further North than New Hampshire! Thanks.

one more thing. if possible schedule the visits for when school is in session.

For my second child we scheduled a few schools late, and had to go visit one during christmas vacation when no students were on campus.

Yeah, that's a pretty major thing for me. I really want to see how the school works and how reality differs from the information that they give out.

Yes, only visit when school is in session. We had a problem with one school, when on my d's interview day a headmaster surprise day off was given. Frankly, it was a joke, especially when you travel 2000 miles to visit the place. Things like this can't be helped and I hope it doesn't happen to any of you. Good Luck!

We had the xmas vacation visit as well as that was the only time we could make it to the school were my daughter is (we were already in Connecticut playing hockey - so it was a relatively short side trip). Our hockey schedule (every weekend except 3 from end of September to first week of April) was jammed full already. One of those 3 weekends was another school visit (in Ohio closer to home) while it was in session.

One advantage of an 'off-day' visit is that you do get more attention from the staff and probably a better interview.

Things seem very good despite our visit time, luckily. I would recommend going when school is in session if you can.

One exception to the visit before the snow flies - if you are playing a winter sport and it is one of your priorities (i.e. looking at playing college sports) I would recommend going during season and participating in a practice if you can. Those are the kids and coach you will probably bond closest with and if the personality of the team doesn't fit you, you will be miserable.

Since the schools that I'm going to visit are so close together (less than one hour's drive according to Mapquest) would it be okay to visit two in a day?

One or two a day worked for us. But don't schecule them back to back. If there is a sport, art, academic area or ec that you are especially strong in that might be a hook, you might want to schedule time with the coach, teacher, etc.

My dad has set up visits at Exeter, Andover, and SPS. I am considering also visiting Milton and Deerfield now.

how far ahead did you set up your interviews for, is it hard getting a spot or anything?

We set them up for just under a month in advance. My dad told me that some spots were already taken, but there were open spots for all the schools.

is november to late to visit? december?

I'm probably visiting in either October or Christmas Vacation in late December...

I think tours and interviews run through January, too. :)

yeah, they do, but you might not want to be there when the snow hits...
