@asil65 Thanks for checking on the pool issue. I am just parroting what I was told. If that is incorrect, I would love to know!
@PAO2008 - DS also had a really tough BC Calc HS teacher. He didn’t give partial credit and his tests were much tougher than any of the practice problems. He was also a really great teacher - the class wasn’t designed to “teach to the test” and was able to bring a greater depth of understanding. I think DS scraped by with a B, but most of the class scored a 5 on the exam!
@Asil65 DS is in one of Lehigh’s integrated programs - CSB. He will graduate with a degree in Computer Science and in Business, which is jointly awarded by the College of Business and Economics and the P.C. Rossin College of Engineering. He has really enjoyed all the classes so far. He has decided to stay at Lehigh for the first Summer Session so has just registered for his summer and fall courses. One of the perks of the CSB program (and IBE, not sure if there are others) is that he is able to register for classes 15 minutes before regular registration. So this Spring, he had no trouble getting the courses he wanted and was able to avoid the early a.m. classes. I think his first class was at 10:20 a.m. Apparently, one of the courses he is taking this summer is a “weed out” course for CS so we’ll see how that goes! Socially, he is really enjoying himself. He is in one of the Lower Cents freshman coed dorms and likes it there. Apparently, most of the kids in his dorm applied to Lehigh ED. My son didn’t though, so I’m not sure how housing assignment works. He is in a forced quad - it was originally a triple and they added another bed, desk and chair. It is fairly spacious and they have their own bathroom, but it is shared by 4 boys so fortunately I only saw it at move-in when it was clean! He is close to Rathbone Dining Hall and the gym, but farther from “the Hill” where the Greek houses are. He just went through the housing lottery and fortunately one of his roommates for next year pulled a high number so they were able to get one of the apartments so will have a kitchen and living room. DS has gotten involved with various activities at Lehigh. DS played soccer in HS and plays with the Lehigh club team. Additionally, they often have casual pick up soccer games indoors and out. I think it is probably the same for Ultimate - a club team and pick up games. He told me he also just joined the running club. He is an officer for his Residence Hall and is on the CSB board. We had heard that Greek life dominates the social scene at Lehigh, but DS doesn’t really notice a big division. He decided not to join a fraternity, but has friends both Greek and non-Greek. Students accept and respect everyone’s choice and he has found it to be an inclusive campus socially.
Does anyone know approximately what the average gpa is for Lehigh freshmen in engineering? Even a guess would be helpful.
Thank you KJM64 for the excellent information. Good to hear about your son enjoying the school on a social level and not necessarily through a frat. Not sure where my son stands on joining a frat. always thought that he would not be into that but it sounds like there are so many different frat based houses that maybe something will feel right. Sounds like your son is really happy at Lehigh.
Why is the ED admit rate for LU so high these days?
Not sure ClarinetDad16. I know in the past 2 years it has been around half of the incoming class. Same goes for Lafayette.
Looks like 2 kids had a little bit too good of a time at D Life weekend and ended up with an underage drinking citation.
Thanks for posting that.
Students had to agree in writing not to drink on Diversity Weekend. I think the school has to rescind them.
At the admitted student day that I attended, parents were already grilling the administrators about students’ partying. I think that many parents who will be interested in whether Lehigh is are going to rescind these admits and send a clear signal that this behavior is unacceptable, or wink at it and invite more problems next year. If anything happened to one of these minors, the school could have a big liability. Once they are on campus as college students, that is different, but while they are visiting minors, they just can’t drink.
The reporter should have asked Rogalsky how his roommate answered the student’s questions: 1. How much homework is there? and 2. Are the girls “easy?”
I hope the answer to the first question was that there is a whole lot of homework.
I hope the answer to the second question was that Lehigh women are probably willing to have sex, but probably not with you! lol
@Much2learn, University of Pittsburgh has a good engineering program. They take all the same classes the first year and then specialize in sophomore year I believe. So you don’t have to decide at the onset.
I think they have club water polo.
@mommdc Thanks for the thought.
At this point she has to make a decision in the next two weeks.
She has three public admissions: Wisconsin, Illinois, Purdue
She has three private admissions: Lehigh, Case Western, Northeastern
Being an 18 year old, she has not come out and said what her final decision is yet. She says she is “thinking about it.”
However, the only two schools she visited twice were Wisconsin and Lehigh. I think she would be very happy at either school, but based on the smiles I saw on the visit, I am pretty sure that she is going to say Lehigh. She just wants to drag it out for a few more days.
I think that having an arrest record with the police for the rest of their life, thousands of dollars to clear it up, and losing their drivers license is punishment enough. I don’t think Lehigh will rescind their admission.
From a practical perspective, I agree with what you are saying. However, the school paper is quoting a host as saying “…multiple other hosts asked him what party he would be attending with his prospective student.”…"apparently … that’s what we were supposed to do,”
This makes it sound like the school knew about it and is basically furnishing alcohol to minors by proxy (“that is what we were supposed to do”). I do not believe that is what happened, but this article sure makes it sound like that. The universities legal counsel has to be apoplectic about that implication. They may want to send a very clear message that that is absolutely not the case.
My son and I had a wonderful visit at Lehigh yesterday for Lehigh Life Days. The weather was perfect. The campus was gorgeous .Son got to sit in on a Calc 2 class in the am which lead him to believe that with AP credit he will be prepared for that class. Got to visit the mountain top campus. Food was great at Rathbone. Visited one of my good friend’s son who is a freshman on campus to check out his room and ask him and his friends some more personal questions. Excellent student panel and ended with a dessert reception at the Presidents house where my son got to talk with some engineering Professors. We stayed at Hotel Bethlehem which was a beautiful hotel and checked out the shops in North Bethlehem. So funny. We still did not come home with a T shirt. We spoke with about 5 other boys on the tour who all had not decided where they are going to school. Pretty sure within the next couple of days he will be ready to say" Yes" to Lehigh. He felt like it was a better fit than Lafayette. Much2learn - I did find out that my son’s friend plays water polo at the on campus pool.
Re: Diversity Life Weekend - DS attended this event last Spring when we were deciding. His host was a Senior about to graduate - he was the President of his fraternity and it was his birthday Saturday night during D-Life, so yeah there was a party and lots of drinking! DS felt like the weekend was an authentic glimpse into what it would be like to attend. DS said he didn’t drink and there was no pressure to do so. He also signed the agreement not to use drugs or alcohol and was aware of the consequences. Honestly, I believe the incoming students referenced in the article just made a poor choice. I think some students see the visit as a chance to get an early start on college parties. There is no alcohol available at the school sponsored activities and IMO it is not incumbent upon the school to police the students.
@Asil65 Glad you and your son had a wonderful visit
Much2learn, oops! I don’t know why I thought that your D was HS class of '17. I thought this was a pre-application visit.
Well, Much2learn - First Lehigh Lesson for daughter - Enjoy the parties and have a blast improving those very important social skills…but don’t do stupid things like drinking yourself silly while underage… Didn’t even have to buy an expensive textbook for that one.
Bet the “hosts” get a thorough questioning.
@Asil65 “Pretty sure within the next couple of days he will be ready to say” Yes" to Lehigh"
I think DD2 will commit to Lehigh too. She just wants to “think it over” first. I think that she will be the happiest at Lehigh.
@asil65 “I did find out that my son’s friend plays water polo at the on campus pool.”
DD2 will be very happy if that is true. She loves to play wapo.
@sonofasa1 “Bet the “hosts” get a thorough questioning.”
I bet you are right. At a minimum they have to make it very very clear to all hosts, that it is absolutely not “what we are supposed to do” and, from a legal liability standpoint, there can be no ambiguity in that message. The article practically makes it sound like the party was at President Simon’s house. lol
