A Great Visit at W&M

I know this is decision week so this is a bit off topic, but I'll jump in anyway. All over the country this is about the time that Jr's head out with their parents on well planned college tours. My son has the benefit of seeing several schools when his older brother toured three years ago. Different kids, different goals, and very little overlap, which is fun for me because I love touring schools...the architecture, the history, the class offerings, the dining halls!! I walk away always wanting a "Do over"! :)

I don't know if it was the sunny days that ended up being snow (yes, we were snowed on in NC), but S3 was somewhat ambivalent and underwhelmed just about everywhere we went. I tried to let things just settle thinking maybe in a week or so he'd reevaluate and find things he liked about some of the schools. Monday afternoon we drove into Williamsburg in the pouring rain and I suggested just driving around the campus. As I started to point things out to S3 I noticed the earbuds came out so I handed him a campus map and pointed to where we were. He started navigating, directing to things he wanted to see. Even in the rain the campus is beautiful.

The information session was crowded, as we knew it would be, but so well done. He was completely engaged. The admissions director who spoke (wish I had her name) was informative, funny, and really personable (if that's possible with a crowd that large). There was a newly graduated student who was still working in the admissions office who was there to give student perspective. She was charming without being cutesy, very well spoken without being overly rehearsed. She obviously really loved W&M and was very genuine without being overbearing. Oh, and a note about the slideshow in the beginning...don't bother looking through written materials and miss this, you can do that later. Watch the slideshow that is beautifully set to one of their a cappella groups. It's really beautifully done. I would suggest admissions put this on their website. It's really great.

The tour groups were large, again expected. I tried to shuffle all the kids towards the front as they're the ones that really need to hear what's going on. Our guide really did a great job of trying her best to speak loudly so everyone could hear. We saw a good portion of the campus, it was informative, and she answered many questions. The group gave her a round of applause and thanked her. As we broke away to grab lunch at the Cheese Shop S3 immediately said "I really, really, really like it. Realistically what are my chances here.". :) After lunch he asked to head to the bookstore and get a W&M t'shirt. I knew it was serious then, lol.

So, the double edged sword of your student finding a school that really clicks that's also really competitive. Like a lot of students he has some things that will really shine, and others that aren't his strongest points (or I should say he doesn't feel are strong).

Thanks to William & Mary Admissions team on campus for doing such a great job during what is a ridiculously busy time of the year. We felt welcomed in every way. You would have never known during our visit that just a few hours later that hard working group would be sending out thousands and thousands of decisions to the Class of 2017!!! Also, thanks to the W&M reps that keep us informed here at CC. So, many thanks to all and congratulations to the new Class of 2017!! :)

Great report - it made me wish I could do the college tour at W&M just once more (though we’re out of money and also out of kids). So glad your son liked it!

@blueiguana, so glad you had such a great visit to campus. And thanks for posting such a thoughtful shoutout. Couldn’t tell from your post if your session and tour was Monday afternoon or Tuesday morning. Let us know and we’ll be happy to tell you who presented your session.

W&M Admissions,
Our info session & tour was on Tuesday morning. We were blessed with bright sunny skies and greeted by a snowman that was still standing at the end of the sunken garden. S3 had a really positive experience and is looking forward to interviewing this summer.

Blue, your posts are always wonderful. Thank you for all the details. My youngest- class of 2017!- fell in love with Williamsburg and W&M while at a soccer tournament. I can’t wait to take him to tour now!

thanks for sharing your story blueiguana… reminds me of the first time I went to visit W&M!

@blueiguana, Dean Deborah Basket gave that session and Sam, one of our Senior Interviewers from last summer who graduated in December was the student on stage. We look forward to seeing you back on campus this summer!

We just went on a phenomenal tour at W&M today. DS had all the same experiences as the OP posted, though we missed the slideshow. The campus is amazing and so safe and beautiful. Our son’s first choice is Northeastern. On the on the way home today after the W&M tour the tragic bombings in Boston occurred - a mile from NEU, where our daughter is a junior. That doesn’t keep him from wanting to go to Northeastern but it sure put a damper on the day overall, and forced us to look at a side of college we hadn’t thought that much about. But either school is a great choice, so I hope he gets into both and has to choose.

What a great post! We had a similar experience. W & M was his first tour of a school and he was done. He loved it completely and was ready to leave high school then and there. That was his sophomore year and I have been struggling ever since to find other schools that are even a consideration for him. He didn’t like UVA, Tech etc. (Though the UVA admission guy was truly the best I have heard as he gave examples of what to do and not to do on essays, recommendations in a truly humorous fashion.) At this point, he plans to do ED. He did his interview in June. The only reservation I have is that he runs cross country and dreams of running for W & M. It’s a very good D1 school. His high school coach says he is close to making some of the times. He would be so over the moon about attending W & M and running for the team would be icing on the cake. However, I worry about running at a D1 level for him. I’m having him look at Williams which is also a fabulous school but D3 and they have a tremendous cross country program that’s 100 years old.

Anyway, just wanted to add that the several times we have been to W & M we have also had a fabulous experience. From the admissions talk, to the tour guide, to the interview with the senior… W & M almost does too good of a job. As a parent, it is a struggle to get him to look at other schools! And even though he has high gpa, 34 ACT and ECs, I know there are so many other kids out there that fit that same criteria.

@vahockey, so glad your son has had great experiences at W&M. If it helps, the W&M coach might be able to put your son in touch with a current W&M student on the team so that he can ask more questions about what it’s like to be a DI athlete. The coach may also be able to shed some light on whether your son could make the W&M team.

Thanks for the quick reply. We did meet with a student on the cross country/track team and he was very helpful. One of the student’s working in the student union introduced us to him. (I was waiting for my son who was sitting in on a chemistry class. My son was horrified of course that I was chatting up one of the students. But it paid off!) Anyway, my son was able to speak with student athlete for 15 minutes or so and asked a number of questions. I think I am the one who is more concerned than my son is about him running D1. He is excited. He has filled out the recruit questionnaire and updated the coach on his scoring stats from his ACT, SAT II subject tests etc. I did reach out to the Athletic Recruits board on CC and they suggested following up with the coach once he has additional times to report. He is not quite D1 but is close. Just depends on how his upcoming season goes.
