Hey all'
I was curious to know if you are nominated as a Jefferson Scholar from your school if it guarantees you admission into UVA (or does it help)?

I don't think it is any kind of promise that you'll be admitted. As far as I know, your high school can nominate any one person of their choosing. UVA can reject that person just like anyone else, I'm pretty sure.
That being said, the type of people who get nominated are probably good enough to get in on their own merit.

ohhhhhh the jefferson scholars process. let's just say that it's an experience!

if you are nominated by your school as the "senior that demonstrates the most scholarship, leadership, and citizenship" then you and your counselor will fill out an application/nomination form. this form will be sent to your regional committee. the regional committee will read over it and probably offer you an interview. after all the interviews (sometimes multiple rounds), the committee will select one (or more depending on your region) person to be your region's finalist.

once you are a finalist, for all intensive purposes you have been admitted to UVA. if you are RD (like me) you will not get your official letter until the other RD letters go out (actually got mine today!).

when you go to charlottesville for selection weekend (a very extravagant, memorable affair might i add), jack blackburn the dean of admissions will tell you all the stats of your class and congratulations, you have been accepted to the university of virginia (loud applause).

after the selection weekend um...festivities...you will receive an email about their decision.

the jefferson foundation is not part of the university of virginia. actually, the scholarship from the foundation isn't really a scholarship. the foundation writes you a check for the total cost of attendance which you can theoretically use as you please. UVa knows that you are a finalist but basically doesn't care; you are not guaranteed anything (except admittance) from UVa for becoming a finalist. finalists do not get special housing or registration or any other privileges.

but like molly said, if you're strong enough to be your school's nominee, you're probably strong enough to get in anyways. the jefferson was particularly helpful for me because what i lack on paper i make up for in charisma, so i totally rocked the interview.

i hope you are your school's nominee! if you have any other questions, i'd be happy to answer them. the jefferson foundation is truly remarkable. i sincerely believe that it is a huge honor to be included among the other kids that are national finalists.

best of luck, -kristin

Kristin,

I believe it's "for all intents and purposes," not "for all intensive purposes." ;-)

Third rounders are in. I didn't get past the second round - but let me just say that you're impressive enough to even get that far, I'm sure you have a solid shot at getting in.

Good luck, being a Jefferson Scholar is an amazing experience.

My D was nominated from her school and had her first interview, but didn't progress to the second round, and was waitlisted. I would think you must at least get to round two for admittance.

Kristin gave an excellent summary. Nice job!

The Jefferson Scholar Foundation offered full scholarships to 43 high school seniors. What makes these students worth the price of their tuition?

I have a question, but I'm not sure if anyone on these boards can answer it (maybe?). I was selected as a Jeff Scholar and am planning on accepting, but I wanted to know, is the check they write us at the beginning of the semester considered income for tax purposes? My dad's just a little concerned about the details.

You should call the bursar or financial aid office at the university. I'm sure they can tell you anything and everything you need to know about that money.

jess- love it that the cav daily quoted you!!!

haha i know, i know
i thought that was pretty funny

jegan there are some tax considerations but they really arent a big deal. The foundation can fill you in.
