A hidden cost difference of colleges-consider the health insurance plan

If you do not have a great health insurance plan on which you will keep your student, you should really evaluate the differences in health insurance plans.

I have two kids who have gone to UCs- Berkeley has an amazing plan, not just great coverage at the health center, but also physical therapy, dental, etc. My D has 100% for her annual dental check up and up to $1000 for wisdom teeth removal. It provides great complete coverage with co-pays and a wonderful list of "in plan" providers.

Another D went to a different UC, not nearly as impressive with their coverage- no dental at all, which is a big expense for college kids, esp when you add in wisdom teeth.

We also have experience with a public and a small private in another state, both of which basically offer a health center for everyday things and that is it-no dental, no PT, not much in the way of prescriptions.

If you are making a spread sheet of cost comparisons, which I did, this would be one area I would not have thought to compare; mainly I am amazed by the Berkeley coverage.

Great post! Our family's health insurance plan stops coverage when the child is 19 years old, and we don't have dental insurance.

Son is at UC Berkeley and we waited for the Berkeley health insurance to kick in before having his wisdom teeth removed. Saved us $900+!!
