Ok, so I'm going to Berkeley and plan on waiving the health insurance because I am on my mom's insurance until I'm 25 and the coverage is good. When I waive the insurance $1200 will be credited back to my account. Do you think that $1200 will be disbursed to me along with my extra financial aid or do you think they will reduce my university grant?

My roommate went through this exact thing and they reduced her university grant.

Aw really? I was hoping that I could use that extra $1200 to pay for other school stuff. Was your roomate offered loans and work study and stuff? I know if I were to get outside scholarships they would reduce my loans and stuff before they got to the university grant. I was hoping they would do the same with this. I guess if I don't get the $1200 I might keep the insurance so I can have double coverage and maybe it would lower my deductibles or something?

Let me ask her. I know she has 0 efc, so she probably has loans, work study, and grants.

Does the $1200 include dental coverage too?

I'm really not sure about the coverage. I just know that my mom's is good and I don't need double coverage. You can search for it and it gives all the details.

Yea I think I read somewhere that it comes with dental.

Thanks fijeeboi.

I checked out the dental section, and yes, SHIP (health plan) does cover up to $1000 in work per year, at an out of pocket expense of 20% for major work and $0 for basic work, which is pretty good. In case anyone else wants to know.

Out of all the schools I applied to, Berkeley offers the best health and dental insurance. It could be seen as expensive, but it is less expensive than other student plans I researched, and covers more. The dental insurance is the same as my firm's dental, and the health is almost as good as my firm's HMO/PPO (Pacificare) insurance.

Question, I've got health coverage from my company, can i have double coverage? or do I have to cancel the one from my company? I believe my company signed me on a paper saying I do not currently have any coverage from a different place or something of that sort, does anyone have any idea?
I have motion pictures insurance, which is really good.

I waived health insurance last year and from what I remember they credit your CARS account for $600 each semester so its not all at once. They did not reduce my grants so your grants should be fine. I'm keeping health insurance this year though. Its really worth the money.

It will be so awesome to have extra money for books and stuff. Thanks for answering luvtoolearn.

I think it is against the law to have double coverage. If you are covered by your company and will continue working there and being covered, it would probably be better to decline the UCB health insurance unless SHIP is cheaper. If it is cheaper for you to use UCB health insurance, you should decline the coverage your company provides. As long as you continue working for the company, you can always sign up with their health insurance again if SHIP doesn't work out after the year or after you graduate from UCB.

No, it's not against the law to have double coverage. There is a specific paragraph on the SHIP website about the benefits of having double coverage. I think the only way you wouldn't ne able to have double coverage is if your current health insurance policy. Check out the SHIP website.

What would the benefits be of having double coverage? For me, none. The SHIP coverage is basically the same as my firm's health/dental insurance, but maybe with slightly better pharmaceutical benefits. However, my firm's health insurance does specifically state that we cannot have insurance both through my firm and through someone/somewhere else. It sounds like EGBlue's firm policy is the same.

under "Fee" this is what it states, according to the FAO offer letter website.

*Includes 1,276 health insurance fee. Students who waive out of the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) will have their financial aid reduced when the Financial Aid Office is notified that the waiver has been processed.

Awww. Well thanks for posting that for me.

Wait, that doesn't necessarily mean that they'll reduce my grants. Maybe if I'm lucky they'll reduce my loans and work study stuff first.
