Great advice! My daughter is similar to your son in that she is very conscientious about going to class and being early to get a good seat in the front, even though many of her fellow students don’t and similarly prefers that over reading a lot, she’s been improving finally this semester been working on actually reading her textbooks more with her gateways! The thing we do need to work on is her shyness about going to office hours and meeting with professors., I’m hoping this changes at UMD- we keep giving her pep talks on this and hopefully this will get more natural for her as she sees other students going to office hours. Any professors that your son has especially enjoyed?
Hi Mdmom44. I would suggest that she selects a discipline that she has interest in because that will keep her engaged which she will need as all engineering disciplines are difficult. My son is currently a Chem E freshman. When we had our Chem E walk through we were told that it is the most difficult engineering discipline at UMD. This came from the professors who led the lecture for what that is worth.
I will say the interacting with the professors after hours in very helpful. She will see that they are proactive with the students in encouraging them to use their office hours and are constantly communicating that. She should find it an easy process.
I have found the resources for the students in the Clark School to be very good. They are also well communicated to all enrolled students in the program so your daughter wont have to go looking for it.
