How do you like the Clark school of Engineering?

HARD

undergrad:
material is hard, courses are intense, gradings range from F to A, huge curve in every single engineering course.
most TA don't speak english and aren't helpful
most professors don't care about teaching
you will learn A LOT more than at other places (most of the time you struggle and then learn by yourself)
You will not have time for anything else if you are a full time student. I see people stay in the library and study lounge over night.
ENES 100 Intro to engineering is like a grad course to other majors.

grad:
things get a little more laid back
professors care for you a bit more than undergrad because you know them more

Why did you choose U. of Maryland? IT sounds difficult in the Engineering school. Are you still happy with your choice despite the hard curriculum?
Are there good internships and research opportunities for those studying Computer Engineering? What are the kids like? Is it easy to make friends?

Well I chose maryland because many other reasons, not just because of the engineering school. I'm happy with my experience here. Learned alot. In the department of ECE, professors are tops in the nation (comparable to any program in the country). I think aerospace & electrical & computer engineering require more than 120 credits to graduate. So if you're ECE, you pretty much need to take 3,4 EE courses every semester.

The students in engineering generally have a don't-care-attitude. The classes are quiet most of the time. People seem like they're out of energy until someone start to speak up. However, whenever I talk to anyone, I always get a nice response back. There is none of those kids who just ignore you completely. Everyone knows it's hard, challenging, everyone will work together in group works.

Maryland engineering is #1 public in the northeast, you will get a lot of companies coming to recruit. The career center at UMD does a very good job, all you do is go there and post your resume, you will hear from companies. Also engineering school has its own career office. So opportunities are plenty. Plus it's close to DC, baltimore, you will get lots of internship & jobs for sure.

What do you think of U. of Maryland ECE vs. CMU Computer Science vs. USC Computer Engineering? U. of Maryland felt very, very big. Do you get personal attention at U. of Maryland honors program?

In the honor program, you take the same classes as other students except some of the ECE classes you need to take the H version (but they are essentially the same material). You don't get that much personal attention but you will be honored if your gpa is really really high (I think there's a banquet every year inviting those students to be recognized).

I would rank CMU comp sci first, then UMD ECE, then USC comp eng for undergrad.

good site to see what students think and all the facility, professors... in the department

Do you know anything bout their Civil engineering program? Hows that?

What's the average gpa of an undergrad student in Mechanical Engineering? Is the Clark school as competitve as the Smith Business school? I'm currently attending a CC and hoping to transfer to UMCP next year--majoring in accounting--but have an interest in engineering as well, but don't know if I can handle all the math required for an engineering major.

on average, the engineering school & business school from UMD are both equally well known. They rank about the same (with engineering grad school is ranked higher). For mechanical engineering, you need to take calc 1,2,3, differential equations, linear algebra. Other maths are optional.

You can check their website for more info
just google umd mechanical engineering or umd civil engineering.

what's the general reputation of bioengineering (considering how new the department is)

Its funny you guys talk about engineering being tough, try pure mathematics. Math is without a shadow of a doubt the toughest major here, its not plug and shug mates, this is proof and creativity at best. I took a phys401 Quantum Physics last semester after taking Math410,411. The class was tough but all the topics were very mathematically familiar, the rest of the class couldn't do math for crap, thats why its tough for engineering students. anyways w/e.
