A little bit lost on this whole essay writing process...

Hi guys,
I'm new to this site and after browsing a little bit, I've seen the good advice you all give to each other and I'd like to get in on that. I'm the first person in my family to ever apply to college, so I don't really know what is right for an essay. This past year in my honors English class, we had an assignment to write a chapter of our memoir. The chapter had to outline an instance that had a lasting impact on our lives. For me, this was the death of my grandmother... a topic that is really cliche for college essays, right? It's not exactly focused on her death, it's more of the effect it had on me. I was considering condensing the essay (it's 1632 words) and using it for my applications. Would anyone like to read it, and tell me whether or not this is a good idea? Your help would be reaaaally appreciated :) Thank you!
