hey everybody. well i was just wondering if i have a chance. i am a junior at a competitive high school in texas.

i messed up freshmen year but got all A's sophomore year except english (B+) and currently have all A's junior year. i am in all AP classes. Will they see the upward trend? i heard some schools ignore freshmen year stats but i don't know. My gpa is pretty low 3.6 (of 4) UW and 5.3 (of 6) W. I am top 11%. if i get all A's second semester i will be top 10. hopefully i can compensate a little with everything else.

Head Librarian and section leader for my orchestra. (one of the top in texas and nationally recognized)
i am potentially a four-year-all-stater (an honor that less than 5 people in my school has accomplished)
my highest rank is 18th overall Double Bassist in Texas
in the houston youth symphony (6th year and section leader) and played concerts with the houston symphony
I have traveled with my orchestra to play tours in China and Europe (austria, germany and places)

Over recent summers i have attended a medical program at berkeley and a music program at baylor

No, i have not taken the SAT yet, i plan to take it in march or april. but i think i can pull off a 1900 or higher.

if you are wondering why so much orchestra stuff? Yes, i plan to double major in music performance and either chem, physics or bio.

what are my chances for:
USC
rice
UT austin
Baylor
university of michigan - ann arbor
johns hopkins
nyu
or any of the university of california's

Yes, you have a decent chance at all these schools (Rice might be a little harder). Just study for the SAT and try to get a 2100+. That would really help you out.

As for your GPA, most colleges pay freshman year grades little attention anyways. They know that some people have a hard transition. It’s the sophomore and junior (and senior) grades that matter the most. For the UCs, they don’t even consider 9th grade GPA. So in reality, your current GPA is a lot better than it looks.

Schools that ignore the freshman year’s grades include:
Stanford
Rice,
the University of California campuses, and
Princeton

Your SATs won’t be high enough for Stanford or Princeton, but I’d definitely apply for Rice and for the UC campuses (if you can afford them) since your stats will get you into UC Davis, UC Santa Barbara, or UC Irvine for sure–and possibly into UC San Diego and/or UCLA if you can get your SAT up to 1950 (UCSD) or 2000 (UCLA)–though you are not very likely for UC Berkeley as an out-of-state student unless the SAT goes to at least 2100, and you add some academic competitions to your ECs. Your chances at Rice are about the same as for UCSD as an out-of-stater.

As far as the others:
Baylor–Safe Match
Univ of Texas at Austin–Match
USC/John Hopkins–Match to Slight Reach (depends upon getting your SAT up to at least 1950 and making top 10% at your school)
Michigan–Match
NYU–Match–unless applying for Stern or Galletin–then Match to Slight Reach (same comment as for USC/John Hopkins above)

wow i didn’t know. well hopefully i can get a good enough score on the sat. thanks. but ut austin a match? i thought it was hard to get into - especially their honor programs.

You’re in-state. It shouldn’t be hard to get into at all. Assuming that you get into the top 10% at your school, you are guaranteed admission if your school is recognized by UT-Austin’s 10% rule. As for the rest of those schools, Calcruzer is pretty much spot-on in chancing you, although it is difficult to make those realizations when all you have to go on is predictions for the SAT.

UT austin is not a match!! you are guranteed a spot IF your in the top 10% so 90% of the class is in the top 10% so its a big reach for you. Rice isn’t a match or even close to being one (get your GPA up to a 3.8+, SAT to like a 2200+) plus your in-state so thats even harder. Rice DOES count freshman GPA…

All but the top 3 UCs should be attainable. Are you sure your parent’s want to pay $40K plus at them with no aid when it will probably take 5 years to graduate because of CA’s budget woes?

your GPA shouldn’t be a worry, if you want a good shot, 1900 is a good score, but a 2000 is a safety score that makes you competitive and makes you rely on other aspects of application (same goes for 1900)
