A Month Long Thread, December, What Brings You Joy (in your day)?

New tennis balls! :slightly_smiling_face:

Last night my D24 sat with me for an hour and worked on a jigsaw puzzle and chatted companionably. She normally spends as little time as possible with us and doesn’t usually have much to say (have I mentioned here that she is not the easiest kid?!?) so to have that unsolicited company was a complete joy. Who knows how many years it will be before it happens again :flushed::worried:

Yesterday friends drove us a bit up into the mountains to show us a great pizza place they like. What a joy to take a little road trip, have a nice evening with people we really like.

Christmas cards! I love getting them. I hang them on my wall and I love looking at them.

Plugging in the Christmas tree lights is a nice little joy. We have an empty nest, and we may only have a couple of people here throughout the month, but we still went and cut down a tree and decorated it. We only did the tree, the mantle, and a couple of little tables. But it is nice to have some decorations.

I was coming here to post something similar to @1214mom

I finally got my outdoor lights/garland/red bows strung up today. And this year, since we live on a corner and I have a lot of extra strands of lights, I decided to string lights along our fence down the side street side of our house.

I was so excited when dusk arrived and the lights all came on for the first time this year.

Though I just got our tree yesterday and won’t put it up until this weekend, I have some indoor lights and battery operated timer candles that I look forward to each evening when they finally come on. Makes it feel cozier somehow.

Today my joy came in threes:

A great walk and talk (and laugh!) with my best friend.

A great game of tennis after work. I only learned to play in the last few years…it is truly a source of joy to me to learn and improve and really enjoy something so athletic this late in my life (I could write the same thing about pickleball, but that was yesterday’s activity).

An after dinner stop at the library and the small stack of books I returned home with. There’s nothing like cracking open a book.

D was begging for a suggestion of what to buy us. The llbean catalog arrived and H says he’d like a new pair of red flannel pjs and I said I’d like a set of flannel pjs with a collared shirt too. Sent D a screenshot of the catalog with the 15% discount code. She’s happy and we are happy!

Am amused and pleased that DH is finding joy in locating Grinch themed outdoor decor.

All week long he’s been like a little kid; it’s so fun to see him excited about the piecemeal deliveries of his chosen items.

Makes me happy bc typically he works way too hard and struggles with taking time for himself.

In this season, thinking of and obtaining gifts I think a specific person on my list will enjoy brings me joy. He is pretty hard to buy for and usually asks for very little.

This year as I decorate I am sorting out the things I haven’t used. My daughter’s best friend who grew up with her and us is in her first house with nothing yet. So I am passing items on to her and it brings me joy to see her happiness and to know they will be used, not landfill.

I have struggled with sleep over the last 9 months or so, often waking in the wee hours and not being able to fall back asleep for over 2 hours. This last week I have been able to get good sleep for 5 of the last 7 nights which is my best stretch for some time. A good night’s sleep brings me joy, but also not having to set the alarm clock in retirement.

My dear friend us retiring after 27 years at the Dept of Health—I told her as a public service we will have to try our some of the restaurants in the community and she’s excited about the prospect, as I am.
