A new low?

I bet there’s a whole lot more to this story than indicated in this very poorly researched article.

Thoroughly debunked by bclintonk in this thread: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/parents-forum/1831501-u-minnesota-student-government-rejects-annual-recognition-of-9-11.html#latest

Not even close to debunked.

I bet there’s not.

I checked. There is.

A great tragedy- that also killed Muslims. Every possible moment in the US may offend some group. Making Christmas a holiday? Offensive to others in giving recognition to one mythology. There is a practical side to that being a holiday as a majority has wanted the day off.

Given the current state of discourse in our country. We could use more than just MOMENTS of silence. I for one am in favor of turning down the volume whenever possible on many fronts.

I got as far as reading that acknowledging the losses of 9-11 was a form of Islamophobia and I closed the link. Waste of time to read that dribble.

I’m still amazed at how some posters are willing to twist themselves into pretzels to justify the most ridiculous positions of the student SJW crowd. Somehow, being a loud, left-wing student at a university means they are always correct, particularly if they happen to be members of a minority group. Apparently the world would be a much better place if only these people were in charge of everything.

Social justice warriors aren’t all bad, but at this point, they really need to stop. I’m kind of surprised that nobody’s hopped on this site and told me that my profile picture is offensive to gay women who like cats, or something. I am a gay* women who likes cats -_-

Once again, this was a VERY biased report about the action of a VERY, VERY few individuals. I again refer to the very good analysis done by bc in post #19 on the previous thread.

There will ALWAYS be outliers.

I don’t think this group understands this concept.

There were evidently some students who gave “inciting Islamaphobia” as a reason for voting against the proposal. If that is true, it is ridiculous - obviously we shouldn’t tolerate Islamaphobia, but that doesn’t mean refusing to acknowledge a national tragedy because of the chance that some people will take it out on innocent Muslims. I mean, if the news refused to report on crimes by terrorist groups, that would also probably cut down on Islamiphobia. I hope most people don’t view that as a reasonable option.

However, the proposal to begin a yearly 9/11 memorial 14 years after the attacks seemed in context, from what I’ve read, to be a transparent bit of political theater, and I would imagine many of the people who opposed it did so on those grounds. This is a tempest in a teapot.
