I finally got around to writing a visit report about my visit last April. Just letting you know. (Heck, I took the time to write it, I hope someone reads it.)

Cool...I agree with some of the buildings looking very institutional and "standardized"..

Part of the campus is "not that nice" and part is very nice, especially the entrance. Looked like they are doing some construction on the hospital nearby when I went a few weeks ago.

Overall I agreed with the review. Stony Brook is a quaint town, but I am instate and only about 50 minutes away by car. If I was out of state I am not sure if I would go there (I wouldn't go to any school out of the NY, NJ, CT, MA area), here, you have Princeton, Harvard, Yale, NYU, etc. etc. most of the schools here are really top notch, including SBU.

Seems like a pretty fair review; I only hope I was the counselor you met with. :D

I don't know that I'd rule us out outright if you're not a NYS resident -- our out-of-state tuition is only $3000ish more than that of the NJ and CT in-state tuitions, plus we offer pretty competitive grant and scholarship packages for out-of-state folks. This fall's freshman class is about 15% out-of-state, and it'll probably be about 20% in Fall '08. So that's really changing quite a bit.

Like most campuses, we're constantly under some construction... they've done a nice job with the entrance, and most of the common spaces and quads. Some of the academic buildings around here are just bleh, but they were built during a pretty bleh time for institutional architecture -- all function, zero form. Thankfully, the newer buildings -- like Wang and Humanities -- are really nice, and all the current construction is aimed at improving that which is now horrifically ugly -- like Javits. This campus has come a looooong way since I first looked at it seven years ago.
