I'm interested in getting students' perceptions about SBU. We're looking into this school for my daughter who is a hs junior and very much interested in the sciences. I would be interested in hearing about on-campus experiences for out-of-staters (we're from Connecticut), whether it's mostly a commuter school, etc. Also, are all the classes huge and taught by TA's? Any information is appreciated.

the school ranked #1 for unhappiest students, yes most of the students commute, and everyone i spoke to (three current undergraduates) said not to attend unless its ur only choice.

My daughter has just finished her first semester at Stony Brook and she loved it! The reason she attended Stony Brook is because she has a guaranteed transfer to Cornell after one year and she decided to stay at home and commute to Stony Brook. She liked it so much that she is considering staying. She will be moving onto campus next semester and she knows students who come from Connecticut, RI, Maine and Texas. The campus has really improved in the past 5 years because of the new president. They now have a central mall with a fountain and the campus is beautifully manicured with perenial plantings everywhere. They have a new football stadium, a new cultural arts center and they are building a new rec center. They are a division I school and will be offering athletic scholarships next year. Many of the athletes are from different states.

In order to enjoy any school you have to be willing to do things to meet people - my daughter joined the rugby team where she has become friends with many girls and guys. Stony Brook is a large school and you have to find your niche. She has some large classes, 600 students (Biology), but most of her classes have 15 (writing)-100 (statistics) students. She seems to be able to talk to her teachers when she needs to. There is a new program where the freshmen take a freshmen seminar which helps them adjust to college life and teaches them study skills.

Stony Brook is in the top 100 schools in the country, and if you are interested in the sciences, Stony Brook is in the top 20 schools in the country. The hospital and medical school is across the street, and the town of Stony Brook is safe and beautiful. There is not much of a town within walking distance, but you can take the LI railroad (which has a stop on campus) to NYC. If you have access to a car you can go to Port Jeff, the mall, and many great beaches. The cost is reasonable compared to other schools and this makes Stony Brook a great deal.

LMFAO SBMOMOF3:

I am a mom of a freshman at Stony Brook, I don't work for Stony Brook. My husband graduated from Stony Brook many years ago and I have taken a number of classes at Stony Brook years ago. When my daughter started at Stony Brook she never saw the campus and we hadn't been there in years. When she went to orientation we were so surprised at how the campus had changed. She was not especially happy to be attending Stony Brook because she wanted to go to Cornell, but she is very happy there now. I decided to post the information about Stony Brook to help other students that might not know how much Stony Brook has changed.
