A non-school recommendation for Film (and other) Students

I saw a blurb in Sunday’s paper about a presentation by the local chapter of the Florida Motion Picture and Television Assoc, entitled "Creative Writing for Comics and Film". Since D is taking a comic class this fall, and has already done some comics, I thought she would like this. So we went and the fellow presenting, a local doctor, has had success as an independent comic and novel writer. He spoke about writing for comics, screenplays, and his experiences with his first novel and the editing process . It was very interesting and we both really enjoyed it. But the best part was afterwards, after they called for guest introductions. They called on D first and said she was going to MCAD and did children’s books and was interested in comics as well. After the rest of the introductions, the meeting broke up and one of the members of the group came over, gave her his card, and just said "Call me". I did not look at the card, but D checked his website on the way home and said he was involved in family friendly TV production. Another member was from Minnesota originally and came over to talk to her. She then went to talk to the presenter and found out he knew D's comic teacher. He was handing out samples of his smaller comics, and after talking to her, also gave her one of the larger compilation graphic novel type/size books (which were not handouts but available to purchase) . All the people in that room were in the film industry, involved in making independent films, as well as coordinating with Hollywood stars doing filming locally.

My point here is not what a great time we had and the free books - it's about networking and putting yourself out there. Except for my D and someone else’s young son (about 10-11 and bored to death), there was not a person under 40 in that room. I know from reading this board, that there are many young adults interested in film (my D has such a friend who needs this push as well). Had we gone, listened, and just left, she wouldn't have made these connections. So to you film kids, while you’re looking around for the school that’s the best fit for you, don’t forget to look around to see what organizations are right in your backyard. You might find yourself a nice mentor along with some great experiences. And take the doctor’s advice: "Self-promote, self-promote, self-promote.”

Great advice! You never know you will become an important connection/mentor. The more you put yourself out there, the more opportunities will come your way!

Good advice. I wish we had something like that around us. I wonder if they advertised in other media besides the paper? Could that be why there were few under 40?

Great story. Looking forward to hearing about any follow-up, which I hope there will be.
