I've heard generally the same things about these classes. Only difference is that I've been able to read reviews about Lew (prof. for A&O SCI 3) but all the LING 1 class has listed for its professor is THE STAFF.

So, from experience, which of these would be the better class to take?

I’m taking Ling 1 this quarter with Schuh, and I’d definitely recommend the class if he’s teaching it again. Email him (schuh@humnet.ucla.edu) and ask if he’ll be teaching it again next quarter. If it turns out that he is, and you have any questions, feel free to PM me.

I loved both of those classes, but A&O 3 was my favorite class I’ve taken at UCLA. I had Professor Brix, though.

I would take A&3 3 over Ling 1. I just think it’s an easier class. It’s a set grading scale and you can work together on the quizes. The exams are multiple choice with some fill-in questions.

Ling 1 with Prof. Schuh is more work than I expected. It also depends on you TA since you’re going to have to go to office hours for help on the HW.

It will depend on what area you’re stronger. If you are a science major then A&O 3 will probably be easier or vice-versa.
