A peer wants to do Questbridge by sending his OWN mom BACK to her native country

Don't you guys think this is overboard? He is wealthy/upper middle class. And today he told me he discussed this with his mom. She would go back to her native country until college admissions were over and by doing this his household's income would be significantly lowered because his father is retired. Just so he can be low income-> greater chance into getting into a better college.

I think this is soooo messed up in sooo many ways. There are people who are ACTUALLY HOMELESS AND HAVE LOW INCOME who have no other way to pay for college than with QB.

This is absolutely ridiculous and it angers me. Although it may not seem like it, my family has suffered through a lot our entire lives and were once at the risk of losing my father (our only source of retirement income, let alone income itself). But these people have had satisfying, content lives, and want to "beat the system," as he quotes. It is so frustrating.

Any opinions about this? There have got to be some opinions about this or I think I may be crazy.

I’m a Questbridge finalist this year. I regret doing the Questbridge match program because I could have gotten into the colleges that I want if I applied early directly to the college because of the high acceptance rate. The bar to be a finalist is not very high because QB will take any able students within the income since they seem to have no quota.

OP, that is insanity.

Yeah, I told him he might not even be matched, let alone become a finalist. But the fact that he would send his mom back to her native country is just so messed up :/

I know what you mean :frowning: there is so much corruption that happens when students try to “beat” or “game” the system.

That is completely disgusting.

What some people will do for a “better” education… Why not just work hard?

Why would sending her back to her native country make a difference? It’s not like her income wouldn’t count just because she didn’t live in the country… I’m a little confused by that. Obviously it’s completely crazy regardless though.

I usually dont post that often but yeah.

I was a finalist who was not matched but later accepted early to a QB partner school.

The QuestBridge app does not ask for tax returns or any proof of financial difficulty. So he/she will probably become a QB Finalist. The QB app is forwarded to the colleges and used by some schools as part of the application. Other schools do not read the app at all. However, we were required to submit all tax forms to the financial aid offices. If your EFC (Expected Family Contribution) is greater than $0.00, he/she probably wont be matched. The tax forms include assets, any companies owned, and any benefits received. ALL money will appear on here, regardless of weather the mom leaves. Typically, if you make a lower amount, it will be reflected on income, unemployment benefits, and assets. If this doesn’t check out, regardless of whether or not the admissions office decides to accept him/her, he/she wont be matched.

Oh and IMO this person is a lying, ill-informed and disgusting person.

Once the mom returns and the family’s financial situation returns to normal, won’t that person lose the scholarship money and any potential financial aid from colleges?

If you really want, and I think you should, you should tell QuestBridge about your peer (anonymously) and what your peer is doing. It really is a low thing to do. Questbridge is for those below the poverty line.

Thank you fellow CCers for agreeing with me.

But yeah I don’t know how he’ll manage to do it; probably keep her there as long as he is in college. He also said his dad cheats on tax returns, has all these sketchy companies, thus increasing his yearly income. Apparently.

Cheaters. And all his friends laugh at this like it’s a joke. I just want to kill them all.

@Butters1, doesn’t QB have to view your tax returns before even being considered for Finalist?

Oh, another thing. I have another friend who was planning on persuading her parents to disown her. I don’t know how that would help- it would definitely make a great hook? And she would receive no income.

Why would you do that? Since when did education become more valued than family?

Society these days. Jeez.

@jesskidding: QuestBridge does not receive tax returns at all. They receive no financial information other than a few numbers where they ask what your parents’ wages and salaries are and they require no offical forms to prove it. Like I said, if your friend goes through with this, he can very well be a QB Finalist. But he will not be matched since the college financial aid office will see the companies, income, and assets.

Remember: when you apply for early admission, you send in the previous year’s tax forms. I applied for early admission this year, meaning I had to send in 2010 tax returns to the schools I applied to. So if this kid is a junior, he will have to send in his 2011 tax returns to any school he applies to for early admission. It sounds to like his mother was still with him that year… Therefore, he will not be matched.

But please. Talk him out of it. What he is doing is wrong. I know many other QuestBridge Finalists and Applicants who are amazing. down-to-earth, and have worked all their lives so they can go to college. They have faced incredible hardship and have not let their hardship change who they are as bright, enthusiastic, and kind individuals. QuestBridge has been a gift to me, and I thank them every day.

If you can, stand up to this person. Because the truth will come out in the financials. It always does. This behavior will be reflected in the attitude of his essays, the recommendations from his teachers, and in his interviews. I hope you can set this person straight.

QuestBridge is not a tool meant to be abused, but a bridge to connect students to amazing universities and change their lives

Putting QB Finalist will still be of help though… wouldn’t it?
And great. That makes me feel a lot better.

It is incredibly wrong…I’m not close with him or anything…but I did subtly hint to him that it’s wrong and messed up.

And yeah I’m sure his behavior will be reflected in his essays. Adcoms are intelligent :stuck_out_tongue: Cocky people…they’re so sure they’ll get accepted, and that attitude will be evident in his essays.

what a piece of trash
