A phone call from the Admission Office

watertester, both the app and the interview were completed before the call. We only received the call a few days ago.

I think there was an important point that flygirl made a few posts ago about showing continued interest in favored schools by attending events if possible. I couldn't agree more! I understand that distance may be a hindrance for many but attending special events may give your #1 pics some "yield comfort" around their decision if it comes down to an eleventh-hour, tough admissions choice. All schools have their 2009 calendar of events posted.

yeaup i had a phone call with the parent of a student at school X. it was really nice, she gave me some nice tips for the interview and the application process.

but never i did i have the experience of the admissions office call my house. that sounds really absurd almost. but yea, anything can happen.

For the OP, as GemmaV pointed out, the school which called you just "showed its hand." From looking through your earlier posts, you have 3 children who attended or now attend 3 elite prep schools. So, your pattern shows that you aren't tied to any one school, but your son has sibling ties at three superb schools.

I don't think they're looking for donations. I suspect they are trying to protect their yield, and giving you a direct hint. If your son is waitlisted at that school, that may not be the final answer. If it is his first choice in March, calling the school, and stating outright, "It's his first choice!" might yield surprising results.

The more I peruse this site the more nervous I get. No one has contacted us, administrators, parents, no one. I wish I could be more like my D who tells me to stay off of cc.

emdee: DO NOT GET NERVOUS.

The MOST competitive schools do not contact families very much in advance of March 10th...and especially not before the application deadline!!! One, they do not want to "show their hand"; and two, before they've seen your grades/SSAT scores, it doesn't matter how much someone might have liked you in the interview, they don't want to get your hopes up by calling you repeatedly and then ultimately reject you.

emdee, it's okay :) I'm only a high school student who has no affiliation with the admission office, but I want to point out that the people on CC indicate only a tiny fraction of the applicants at boarding school. I'm sure it's nothing to worry about, and your daughter will do just fine! On a side note, I do agree with you that CC is very addictive....

They have nothing to ask you and nothing to worry about then... They would call you if like(in this example) they have concerns about yield protection or maybe a hazy spot on your application? Maybe it got lost in the mail?
THE VAST MAJORITY OF APPLICANTS DON'T RECEIVE CALLS! You only hear about the people that do :p

hey emdee- idk school seems fairly competitive to me but then again, what do I know? It may not have even been an actual parent of a student. Maybe I've just been punked! My cousin Ito from Toledo still owes me one from way back and everyone knows payback is...well, you know.

This board seems pretty tense lately. I like the Wii Fit Yoga master as an offset. I've already unlocked 3 new games!

My Exeter alumni interview also asked where Exeter was on my list, I gave a somewhat vague answer but nothing definite. I thought it was pretty standard to ask.

I'm also sort of nervous that I have had NO contact with the schools other than their "Happy new year send in your apps!" emails. Oh well I'm just being paranoid I suppose (: I mean with hundred of applicants how can they take the time to talk to every single one?

Thanks everyone for your inputs! When school starts again, I guess I'll make my son ask his advisor about it.

nyelco...NMH has parent callers contact parents of students who are applying to the school as well as parents of newly admitted students. The calls are as sincere as the school itself and none of the information is "fed" to the admissions office. We don't even get back to admissions with information unless there is a specific problem or concern we can't answer. We (I am one of the callers) are merely being a welcoming and friendly representative of the school as well as a resource for any questions people might have.
I have two sons who attended and neither of my sons were ever asked which school they would attend, but I think they both made it clear early on that NMH was already their first choice.

Thanks everyone. I am the designated worrier in my family. Everyone else is enjoying the holidays, not looking at cc. I was trying to think of a few reasons to call the schools, since they are not calling us, but all my "reasons" are really lame.

Thanks keylyme,

Perhaps it wasn't cousin Ito from Toledo after all but instead, a legit parent caller. To be clear, the caller never asked me which school he'd attend; I think that was other posters' experiences. As for the info being fed to admissions, hmm, I don't put anything past anyone. Paranoid delusions, I realize, but they have served me well to date. Thanks again for the insight.
