A PSA plant *milk* lovers

I don’t drink the stuff m’self, however, that’s add my D will drink. The bottles of almond / oat / soy etc milks etc. were costing me a fortune each week, so recently I invested in a milk maker.
No, not a cow! A machine made by Soybella that genuinely makes creamy, smooth milks in seconds, for a fraction of the cost of store bought, with no additives, sweeteners etc. My daughter loves it and can now get all the protein she needs without me complaining that her milk was costing $25-30/wk

insert obligatory/snarky “It’s not milk if it doesn’t come from a boob” comment. hehe

Agreed that’s why the almond based product should be called “nut juice”. Snark welcomed.

My husband just looked at me and asked why I’m hysterically laughing (I’m supposed to be working!)

Interesting. I’ve not heard of that. But you still have to spend on “nuts, seeds, grains, and beans”. Perhaps with this device a little ingredient goes a long way.

It’s very reasonable to operate ie I buy the 10lb box of Quaker Oats from Costco ($10).
Each box has 55 cups - 1 cup of oats makes 1liter of oat beverage - $0.18
and the pulp is used for overnight oats, thickening smoothies, banana oat bread etc.
No waste, almost no packaging to add to dispose of, and much less expensive in the
long run - the average price of brand name Oatly is $4.50/liter

That’s great. I was thinking more about pricey nuts… but even then perhaps the nut/water ratio makes it very economical. I also like the idea of being more “green”, saving packaging and shipment of heavy liquids.

The main reason I buy premade oat milk is because it is a way to get calcium (which they add to it) since I don’t drink milk. I hate calcium chews and pills, but I’ve got to get it from something. :disappointed:

Thanks for sharing! My son has been vegan since starting college and the almond and soy milk does add up. He drinks a lot of awful tasting protein shakes, but this might be nice for his milk, since he does like to have high protein cereal and is also very frugal.

H uses oat milk- I just checked and his has more added calcium than my cows milk naturally has. I do also use the chewable Calcium/Vit D from Costco.

For calcium, I like Adora chocolate / calcium supplements. Each has 30 calories, so it makes a nice “little something sweet” in the evening. They supposedly have a tad of cow’s milk though if that is a concern.

I bought some of these today, and they are great! I think it is the first calcium supplement I have ever tried that I will actually use.

Thank you!!

Glad you liked Adora. I’ll revive this old thread and mention it again.

Now that you’ve planted the seed that oat milk can be made at home, I now have a plan if we’re out of milk (and no almond milk in the pantry).

Obviously the device shown at top of this thread would be better if you drink oat milk on a regular basis, but this could be a way for me to have cereal when delaying a trip to the grocery store.
