A Question about Baylor

As an Atheist, I decided on Baylor for it’s academics and nice prehealth reputation. Also a major factor in my decision was scholarships and honors program. I have no interest in it’s religious affiliation and would not mind being surrounded by those of faith, since I usually am (I come from a very Baptist family). I do not consider myself a closet Atheist, but I also do not engage in religious discussion unless I am brought into it. I do not preach Atheism. I do not bash those of faith.

My question of concern is this: would a non-religious type like myself find myself being graded unfairly by professors? I doubt that would happen, but are there any stories like this? I’m trying to get into medical school and I plan on working my tail off to achieve the highest GPA I can possibly achieve. But in the back of my mind, I am a little concerned that the religious faculty will look down on me and not give me the grade I worked for due to my lack-of-religion.

I’m positive that I am not the only Atheist going to Baylor this fall. Any tips/suggestions would be very helpful!

I highly doubt that you would run into unfair grading practices because of your beliefs, religious or not. It’s possible, of course, just as it is at any university. However, I never saw that issue personally, nor did I hear of anyone else who saw that problem. You’re definitely not going to be the only atheist, and remember, not all professors believe the same things either. You might agree with them more than you thought you would!

Oh, just a quick caveat: I never took the normal religion classes at Baylor, since I was in the Baylor Interdisciplinary Program. The professors of my BIC version of the religion course were definitely not your typical conservative Christian, though.

Thank you very much, BookAddict. I find your posts to be very helpful! I guess I just had some nervous worries in the back of my mind, but I found Baylor to be a very nice place after visiting it a few times.

P.S. I also gained admittance to the Baylor Interdisciplinary Core and plan on giving that a go. The program looks very interesting!
