Hello, I have a question about Undergraduate Studies in UT.
I heard students who got automatically accepted b/c of top 10% rule goes to
College of Undergraduate Studies.. is this true?

If so, does this mean it would be more competitive to get in UT if i'm applying for Undergraduate Studies instead of Liberal Arts?

I’m sure someone will correct me if I’m wrong, but only top 10%-ers who aren’t accepted into their first or second choice major get put into UGS (unless of course they specified it). UT is only legally obligated to grant admission as a whole, not guarantee a spot in a major.

I’m not sure what other freshman/parents have heard on the subject, but I would think that, as a freshman non-10% applicant, your chances would be better actually specifying a major/college such as COLA, as it demonstrates a more serious applicant, someone who has actually given thought to what they want to study and has researched various majors, rather than just trying to get in anywhere. Makes sense in my head, but then again, I’m not on the adcom.

I would tend to agree with sundoll that if you have some idea what you might want to major in, specifying a major in the college of liberal arts might be better than saying undecided. I am sure this would be true if you specified you wanted to major in something a little unusual. My opinion is that specifying a very common major is probably not much more useful than specifying undecided.
