Can an ED applicant apply EA (not SCEA, mind you, but EA) to other schools?

Yes, if the rules of the EA school allow it. (For example, Georgetown doesn't allow anyone who's applied anywhere ED to apply to Georgetown EA. Neither does Boston College.)

Of course, you can only apply ED to one school at a time.

So I would be able to apply EA to a place like UChicago, which imposes no restrictions?

Brown does NOT allow you to apply anywhere EA (even non-restrictive) if you apply there ED.

What burnitblue said is true for almost all ED schools.

Actually, modestmelody, it's not. Most ED schools allow EA applications.

For example, Columbia University states:
While Columbia does not necessarily encourage the filing of both Early Decision (binding) and Early Action (non-binding) applications, we do not prohibit candidates from doing so.
Dartmouth allows EA applications by specifically prohibiting only additional ED applications (Early Decision)

Swarthmore, Vassar, and other schools do as well.

Applying to one school ED and other schools EA is permitted unless specifically prohibited by either the ED or EA school. Brown and Georgetown (and a few others) are exceptions rather than the rule.

That wasn't the case when I was applying but that was 4 years ago already.

tetrisfan, you cant apply EA to UChicago if you're an int'l asking for FInAId..

But I'm not, so...
