A Question About Ellicott

I know Ellicott houses the Gemstone freshmen, but is the building primarily freshmen otherwise? I have decided not to do Gemstone and am thinking about requesting placement in Denton for several reasons (less high school friends in the building, complete freshmen community, bonding with regular honors kids, etc.).

Thoughts?

The way we understood it, if you decide not to do Gemstone, you'll most likely be in Denton. We understood that Ellicott was Gemstone and other freshmen and sophomores (not honors). D is in the same boat as you (way too many group projects from he** in high school)---and she wanted to double major and have a minor and felt that Gemstone would be too restrictive of her classes and her time. You guys should get some kind of credit for at least getting selected for the Gemstone program!!!

i got accepted to gemstone but i opted out and lived in denton. it was awesome =) hahaha my mom is an astrophysicist too

I'm kind of in a weird boat where I confirmed Gemstone but decided I wanted out...like...yesterday. I've dropped GEMS100 for HONR100 and am still trying to figure out how to officially decline. Sent in a request for Denton, but I'm worried that because I did it so late I won't get a spot :/. Maybe all that matters is the date I turned in my housing confirmation? Eh, I should just call tomorrow.

Yeah, just call the assignments office and they'll try to help you out.

Yeah, it seems like the best they can do is to just put a request in for me (I already sent an e-mail).

I'm less worried now because it seems like if you sent in your housing confirmation in a timely fashion, most freshmen are assigned to where they want.

freshman always get housing. BUT if you apply late, your situation might suck.

hey man i lived in ellicott my freshman year and it was definitely the best freshman high rise. it had easy accessibility to the diner, gym, and stadium. and it wasnt a huge partying dorm (like easton or elkton...youll find out that those are where the 24/7 partyers are haha) so i got a lot of good studying done. i wasnt in gemstone, so most of my friends werent as alot of the gemstone kids hang out all the time as they are in camps, field trips, and usually the same floor together...if you have any questions do not hesitate to ask...i had a great time there and ill miss it

if you drink and like to party...ellicott may not be the place for you as denton would be a good fit with the "normal" honors kids. i found it hard to make friends gemstone guys as they always kept their doors shut, went home on the weekends, and studied during the football/basketball games...stick with denton, they say gemstone does a lot for ya but i dont believe it. its just a hassle as youre stuck with the same people for four years, multiple 30+ pg papers, and no scholarship $$$?

advice: try looking at cumberland or centreville as well...houses both the college park scholars and honors programs

denton denton denton!
