I know you live in Ellicott for the first year. what about the next 3 years? Are you allowed to choose a dorm/apartment?

Yes. You can live wherever you want.

Ahh I see. What do people normally do? 2 years dorm, 2 years apt?

Depends. Oakland just opened up this year and its really nice (its a semi suite and looks really nice), so I might stay here for junior year (I’m a sophomore now). Oakland is primarily a sophomore dorm atm, but we’ll see what happens next year.

2 years north campus (dorms) then 2 years south campus commons/courtyard/houses/appts/etc is probably the most popular since commons and maybe others give Juniors the highest priority for stuff like that.

Is Ellicott a good dorm? I know I have to go there for gemstones

Its alright. Most disappointing is no AC. However, it is conveniently right next to the diner (and also Byrd stadium), and its in a slightly more “central” position than the Denton community.

If you are in Gemstone, other Honors, or Scholars, do you get preference for on-campus housing for junior and senior years?

No. I’d say its based on credit, but my roommate got a much better priority number than me last year even though I came in with more credits and he wasn’t in gemstone/honors/scholars either (and I’m in gemstone).

I think the only significant factor is that you haven’t caused any significant trouble on your floor. By trouble I mean anything from noise violations up (though most RAs are pretty chill, so you REALLY have to be loud repetitive times for them to give you a noise violation).

Other than that, its random. Freshmen, Sophomores, and I think Juniors (after they made Oakland), all have guaranteed on campus housing. I’m not sure about South Campus commons (which are more apartment like, where you need a lease and stuff but are still on campus), but I heard Juniors have the best shot for those (maybe its because they know they can get you to stay for two years?)
