I'm a nursing major in the class of 2013. I currently have a Dell Inspiron 1520 laptop that I absolutely LOVE and really want to bring to school in the fall. My question is, can I keep the Villanova issued laptop at my house in NJ and use my current one instead? Are there any specific programs installed on the Villanova one that I wouldn't be able to get on my Inspiron? Of course I would bring the Villanova one back at the end of Sophmore year.

i’m faced with a similar issue. i just got a brand new laptop after my last one crashed and before i’d decided on villanova, and now idk what to do. apparently though, it really is important to use the one they issue you. it comes with a lot of programs that your professors will teach with and expect your to use. you’d have to wait until you actually get your laptop before you could possibly know what all the programs are, and it’d be really costly and time consuming to have to buy all the software and install it on your own computer now. plus the one they give you is brand new, so it’ll be up to date and everything.

Well, I was 99% sure that I wasn’t going to Villanova (well that plan changed, didn’t it lol)so I got a new laptop. It just seems like such a waste to have a perfectly good laptop sitting at home, not being used. I think I might e-mail or call the school to ask their opinion on the matter.

Well, on a side note, you are home for a week-long break in October, Thanksgiving break in November, a 3.5 week break for Winter break from end of December through mid-Jan, a week long spring break at the end Fed/begininng March, a 5 day break around Easter, and you are done early May (def. by May 9) and you will have 4 months to use your laptop.

You will be home enough to use your laptop at home.

I would def. just use the laptop they give you. Then, when you have a problem with it, you can EASILY take it to Techzone. Trust me, you will save yourself a TON of hassle.

well you could always use 2! Use one as a desktop =]
I am actually buying a new CPU despite that villanova is giving me a new one, but then again I will be a CPU science major and most of my time spent is on a computer.

I doubt having 2 CPUs would be to your advantage since your in nursing and since they are both laptops. Maybe you can still return it or sell it on craigslist or something.

when do we get’m??

You’ll get a thing- i forget if it was email, letter, or something on novasis- to choose whether you want it shipped to you early June, early July, or pick it up when you get to school in August.

I chose easrly June :)

dbear- I believe you can log in online (they mailed you your information) and they can be shipped as early as May 6th.

I chose early May.
You can request to have it shipped on May 6th.

Wow, they are doing it earlier this year! I picked the earliest option last year- and that was June.

I’d recommend getting your laptop the earliest date possible, because it’s one less thing to “get used to” once you arrive.

well I think I’m gonna have 2 laptops since I have to return the one that nova gives me. I don’t quite feel comfortable. It’s a pain when thinking about having to transfer all data to a new laptop when you return the nova’s one

roblan where’d you do it? online?

It’s in the freshman 2009 panel of novasis.

mine says that we cant do it til may 7th… did you already order yours?

Earliest date= May 26
you can order now, but they wont ship until May 26th

I just got the laptop today (Latitude E6400). Its very nice.

got my laptop yesterday.Do any current students know if a lock is necessary or recommended?

got mine 2 days ago.

if by lock you mean login prompt, I think that it isnt necessary. Especially since everyone has the same password.

I changed mine and renamed my hard drive. I didnt like that they branded the hard drive with their name. haha

I love the design but I’m a little critical of the video card. I’ll have to upgrade that :)
