A Question of Chance

Chance threads are understandably unpopular on here, but this is a little different. A dear friend of mine is planning on applying ED with me this fall. I’m worried that they won’t get in, however.

They have near perfect grades, a ~3.8 UW GPA, mediocre extracurriculars/awards (NHS, Leader of a student gov organization during senior year, a handful of academic awards, and minimal work experience), a high financial need, and only a 25 ACT.

ED will increase their chance immensely, but I don’t think it’s enough with the 25. How many points do they need to increase their ACT by to have a good chance? Or… Would a large increase in ACT even be enough to secure a firm spot in the ED race?

They are passionate about going to Oberlin, very smart, yearning to make a difference, but they have a hard time with standardized tests. Any opinions, stories, or scores would be appreciated. Thanks!

I agree that the 25 ACT is the issue. Isn’t there anything they can do to try to improve it? As you probably know Oberlin’s 25th percentile ACT is 28 so they are quite a bit below.
ED will help but without a hook it is going to be a long shot. Not impossible, but tough.

They’ve only taken the ACT once, because of various unfortunately timed family issues, so I’m hoping that the two upcoming chances they have to retake it before the ED deadline will be enough. Thanks for the opinion. I’m sure they’ll do their best to study and bring the 25 up to at least a 28.

might be worth trying the new sat?
