A question of prestige (undergrad)

I've been admitted to Georgia Tech, and have heard people talk about it being "the MIT of the south," etc, but I'm curious -- just how seriously do most people take GT when compared to schools like MIT or CalTech? Or other top schools for that matter?

I'm not really asking about the quality of education, which most agree is of high caliber, but is it really regarded as being in the same league as many elite privates? Even if one only considers engineering? If not, could this be partly due to public/private bias? Or is it pretty much irrefutably in another category than the elites?

Thoughts, anyone?

osricsquallor,

When engineering is the major under consideration, most people take Georgia Tech very seriously and yes, they rank it along with (if not higher than) schools like MIT, Caltech and Cornell.

On the other hand, there is some disparity in terms of funding etc. simply because of the public/private issue. GT is one of the top-ten public schools, yet it is only that ... public.

On average, endowments:
1) Caltech = $1.4 billion
2) MIT = $7 billion
3) Cornell = $4.2 billion
4) Georgia Tech = $937 million

Therefore while GT is the best public engineering school you can attend and has some programs that are more prestigious than their counterparts at elite private schools, the disparity will always exist.

Congrats on your acceptance :) What's your intended major?

I read that GT's endowment was near 1.2 billion. Did it go down or something?

Ah, I see. I'd heard that they broke the billion mark in the past couple of years though. I think. I guess with GT having a larger studen body than many privates, that's spread more thinly?

Bwaaahhhh..? I just checked, and according to USNews, GT's endowment is $54,048,811?? Uh, I don't know where they got that figure, but how could that be possible? Perhaps they're only counting a specific part..? Or maybe someone was drunk when he/she put that there.

Thanks :). I haven't really decided. Either ME or EE. I think. Or underwater basketweaving. Or something. Actually, I think the only reason I got in was because I told them my intended major was und. liberal arts.

they dont care about your intended major when you apply.

Well, I know that in the past few years they've been making an effort to build up the Ivan Allen college, so I thought maybe that gave me a bit of an advantage. I have a friend who applied with better stats than I who didn't get in (intended major was AE).

As pprn00dle said, GT doesn't care about your intended major when you apply.
The figures that I put up were from Wikipedia, which is usually pretty accurate, but who knows ...

Oh. Well that's good then. I was feeling a little like a cheater.. or a cunning strategist! Eh? EH?!?

Leaves my wondering why I got picked over my friend with better grades, more AP's, and ECs(maybe) though . Ah well. GT works in mysterious ways. Thanks for the input!
